David Lynch wants us to meditate to solve violence

Personally, I think that this would work quite a bit, but I can see where this COULD be a crock of shit. I respect David Lynch, even though I think he’s a bit of a nutbar, but although I think it could provide a benefit for concentration, et cetera, I’m not certain that it would stop school shootings.

Meditation? Good idea. Transcendtal meditition? Total bull. Mine as well strap on your medicine man constume and dance under the clear sky to make it rain.

If everyone is meditating at the same time then they won’t be able to shoot anyone. Duh.

Hmmm… that means they won’t be able to return fire. Exxxxcellennnnnnnnnnt…

I can walk and chew gum at the same time, I sure someone out there can meditate and pump off a few shotgun rounds. Or at least sleep-walk/shoot.

“[…]The cure for this is a very, very beautiful cure, a very beautiful technique… that allows any human being to dive within and experience this deepest level of life[…]”

He sounds like he was on drugs when he said that. I’m placing my bet on marijuana.

We´re having a miracle on earth, mother nature does it all for us
The wonders of this world go on, the hanging Gardens of Babylon
Captain Cook and Cain and Able, Jimi Hendrix to the Tower of Babel
It´s a miracle, it´s a miracle, it´s a miracle… oh yeah
It´s a miracle

The one thing we´re all waiting for is peace on earth - an end to war
It´s a miracle we need - the miracle
The miracle we´re all waiting for today

I don’t think meditation will be necessarily more effective than other methods but he could do worse with his money. Unless you have to listen to him at a party going on about how meditation is the be all and end all.

I usually skip meditation until pretty late. You can usually beat the computer strait to polytheism even if you didn’t start with mysticism.

Sil, it’s year 2007. All we need is to send a spaceship to Alpha Centauri and we’ll win.

Actually, David Lynch is fairly conservative in most means. I don’t think that he likes drugs at all, judging on his negative portrayals of drug use in his films.

And negative portrayals of sex. And just about anything fun.

Lynch is a heavy smoker however.

HEEEEEEEY Speaking of David Lynch, has anyone here seen Inland Empire yet? I saw it yesterday… and boy… was it fucked! Pretty cool movie. Horribly long. I don’t know if I want to watch it again because of the length alone, but it would be interesting to watch in parts.

I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the experience of transcendence as bull shit. You experience the world through your perception, your mind, so if you can alter your perception through meditation then trasendence isn’t so far fetched… People accomplish that sort of crap every night when they dream. I’m no expert but the mind is capable of many powerful things, in how the world is via your perception.

We all live in the matrix.

Inland Empire isn’t in theaters here yet.

Transcendental Meditation is a form of mysticism, Gila, and no, I won’t hesitate to write off a movement that claims it can teach people to meditate with their AMAZING MIND POWERS ZOMG! (And which has failed to demonstrate this ability even once) Meditation itself isn’t a bad thing, but that’s not what TM is. It’s no different a scam than Scientology at its base, other than the nature of its supernatural claims and lack of enforcers.

Really? I thought it would have been in all of Europe already. It premiered in the Italian Film Festival, but I guess it was only a local showing. If it comes to Greece, and you not only have three hours to spare but also don’t mind sitting through a nearly plotless dream-like movie then I would recommend it. It was an experience, that’s for sure.

No expectations here for a plot (though I hope to get one from the Clive Barker I’m reading). It’ll come here sooner or later, I’ll interrupt my lazying around on a beach and watch it.

How did you ever come to study the Classics without an appreciation of mystical or transcendent potentialities?

I skipped the optional labotomy on the way to graduate school?

TM is not some hazy maybe-you’ll-be-enlightened-while-meditating diversion. Notice that it is a proper name - TM is a scam run by an old Indian dude (still alive, I think) who claims that anyone can levitate if they sign up (and naturally pay for) the school’s lessons, and that he knows the secrets of immortality. This is not sitting cross-legged and engaging in a bit of self-disciplined reflection, it is Harry Potter witchcraft without the boiled eye of newt. It is absurd, it is shameful.

Why would I ever appreciate something that is so patently and demonstrable untrue, which sells snake oil to too-credulous believers, and contributes nothing to any category of actual knoweldge? I mean, that’d be right up there next to wanking off to a bunch of dead drunks who put words together in a funny order.

That would be the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The Beatles hung out with him for quite some time, as I recall. But eventually they had some kind of falling-out.

Yes - I see now the article mentions such. It’ll quite a day for his claims of immortality when the bugger up and croaks on his business.
