Connecting Computers

Ok, Im working on my friends computer, trying to transfer some stuff with an ethernet cable, problem is, while the two computers are telling me that ive got them hooked up toghteher (the ethernet cards are picking up signals), i cant like find either of the other so i can transfer files. Ive got them both on Win XP, hooked directly to each other with an ethernet cable. No i dont have a router or something else to hook them up with. Any suggestions?

Other thing, would it be worth it to hook them up via infried ports? As they both have them. But i havnt a clue how to do that. Any help here would be appreciated as well.

Infared is slow as hell, so no.

What do you mean you “can’t find” them? Specifically what are you trying to do to locate the other machine? What app, etc.

Finding, meaning finding someway to transfer files around.

You need to use a crossover cable, not a standard ethernet cable. Basically, in a crossover, one ends Tx and Rx wires are swapped so that it’s Tx >>> Rx instead of Tx >>> Tx and Rx >>> Rx. Usually you can get these things for about $10 at a computer store.
