College gone to hell.

I just went back to college after three years. I realized that my Federal Government class and Physics class are a great fit. but when I got to my Computer Science class, which I have to take since that is my major, I was greatly disturbed.

  1. The guy next to me was one of those “I run thirteen dot-com companies out of my bedroom, and I just need to move out to get more server space” types. No, he really said that.

  2. The teacher said his primary goal was to get us interested enough in Java that we come back for the second and third semesters, which most of us have to take anyway, being CS majors and all.

  3. The programming will not be doen from the ground up, like it was before with the other teacher at the school, it will be done “cut and paste” in class, and the tests will involve actually writing a REAL program.

What is this CS for Dummies? I am trying to get a useful degree that will get a me a good-paying well-respected position, not play glue together other people’s code and see if it compiles. As for options I have NONE, no other teachers teach this class and no other colleges in the areas are in my price range. It is almost enough to make me drop right back out of school.

Filed a complaint?

Numbers 2 and 3 are standard.

Sounds familiar.

at least it’s not a philosophy class…

…ahahaha. I know people who beat that first one out. No question.

Spaz, take the advice of someone who dropped from college: FINISH IT. Major on cafeteria hanging-out if you want, just make sure you have a paper that says “I GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE” or people won’t give you a chance of a good job. (Unless you happen to have inside contacts, look like a supermodel, etc.)

In your case, don’t mind how disappointing you find your classes. Chances are that people with even those kind of skills will be needed in the near future. Computers will be EVERYWHERE, and so will people who (STILL) can’t even program their VCRs.

If this is the state of today’s colleges, then I understand how some of the people who manage to beat me out of jobs do it. It makes me want to cry. Maybe i’ll get through it and go into teaching myself and NOT teach that way. I always wanted to teach anyway.
