actually, that’s not a complete interpretation of Shinji. As is explained to him during one of the long inner-dialogue exposition scenes, there are many Shinjis. There is the Shinji in Shinji’s eyes, there is the Shinji as how Misato sees him, or Rei, or Ikari, etc. One of the points of the show and one of its philosophical conclusions is how interconnected everyone in the world truly is, and that even though we’re all individuals, we can’t be happy or complete unless we recognize and face the need of each other to overlap everyone else’s conscious and conscience.
