Cave Story (Doukutsu Monotagari)

I’ve finally beat it, on easy mode, that is

Now I’m trying my hand for the harder one.

I had a blast, obviously =D

Best adventure game I’ve played since Super Metroid/SOTN, and that says ALOT =D

If some of you have not played this really sweet freeware game yet, I strongly urge you to try it out !

I know I’m not the only Cave Story fan here, why don’t you guys share your experiences, while keeping it spoiler-free =)

Ahahaha, you are in for a world of pain.

edit;

Because I know for a fact this will be asked; here’s how to get the ‘best’ ending:

I advise you to try for the good ending yourself before reading this because it has major spoilers.
When you get to the Labyrinth past Monsterr X and the man falls past you, DO NOT fall down to talk to the professor and get the Booster. Instead jump across the gap by running and jumping on the thin red line. If you timed it right you’ll miss the overhang that would otherwise send you plummeting and land on the other side of the cliff. Continue the game as normal until you get to the Core boss, and the flooded room where Curly dies.

BEFORE YOU FIGHT THE CORE go to the bottom-right of the room and pick up the Tow Rope. Now fight the core. After you kill it and Curly gives you her air supply, Use the Tow Rope to attach yourself to her. Continue into the Waterway.

GO INTO THE DOOR halfway through the Waterway, just after the first sequence of rapids. Rest on the bed to put Curly there. Go look at the computer twice then examine the bookshelves a couple of times to find the book on how to drain robots. Drain Curly. When you leave, TAKE HER WITH YOU. Continue the game as normal.

When you reach the Plantations, go to the bottom-right where the Cthulhu is to find Curly on a bed. Talk to her and the Cthulhu a few times to find out you need a mushroom. Go through the normal stuff until you’re at the rocket that takes you to the Throne, except THIS time you’ll get the Booster v2.0. Now, head back to the Mimiga Village using the teleporter or the long way. Go into the Graveyard and then to the top door that was previously unaccessible. get the Mushroom Badge-Thingy from the mushroom. Leave the room then re-enter. Talk to the mushroom a few times and then kill him to get the REAL Mushroom. Go back and feed it to Curly and your REAL reason for being on the island. Continue the game.

Now when you’re on the run after killing the Undead Core, go back into the last house with the save point. SAVE. See that hole? Drop down it.

I won’t spoil the next part for you. I will tell you this however: You will hate the developer with all your soul.
Which system?

PC.

I really tried to play this game with the keyboard, but I can’t get used to it. I didn’t even have the patience to get very far into it. I definitely need a controller for games like that (as if I didn’t know yet).

They’re suprisingly cheap, Wal. I got a decent one for ten bucks (dunno from where, though; gave a friend the money and he got it for me) and another pretty cool one for seven at a computer show. Make sure you get one with at least eight buttons.

Yeah, I assume they are, but I keep forgetting every time I go to the mall, arr. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey, um…can someone tell me how to open the shield in the Egg Chamber?

You have to go inside the eggs, whichever ones were displayed in the room with all the computers

is the level 3 version of the nemesis supposed to suck? It has no range and only does 1 damage. It is so awesome at level 1 though…

Upon start up, even though I’ve patched it, I get a strange japanese error and then it closes. Any ideas? I’m stumped.

:kissy:

The nemesis gets worse as you level it.

The Nemesis is next to useless in Sacred Ground. Just take the Blade. You’ll hardly use it anyway.

Fun tip; In the Sacred Ground, you can kill the Heavy Press in about ten seconds by just standing directly under it and firing up so that your Missles and Curly’s Nemesis hit at the same time, since you both fire upwards so long as you’re standing on the ground.

Also, this is really obvious, but uh… get a USB controller, not one with a controller port (or else you probably won’t be able to hook it up)… Although I doubt they still even make controllers that connect with a controller port. =P

And yeah, you can get a decent controller for 10 bucks or so pretty easily.

You have a PS2, right? Don’t bother with a computer controller. Just get a ps2 controller adapter for the computer… You can get them at radioshack, EB(I think), maybe other places like london drugs or future shop. You just plug it into the usb port on your computer, install it with the disc if there is one, and then plug your ps2 controller into it. It’s waaaaaaaaay cooler than using a pc controller!!! :ark:

I’m not finished with this game yet, but what is the point of the booster? You can fly longer and with better control just by using the machine gun.

Plot device. After you complete the game with the good ending check my huge spoilered post at the top of the thread. Booster v0.8 is next to useless, but the Booster v2.0 is awesome as all hell.

Plus if you want to get the Spur (HYPER MEGA CANNON) you need to keep the Polar Star and pass on the Machine Gun.

I’m having a helluva hard time on my second play through, primarily because I passed on the machine gun. That Spur better be worth it… -_-

Same here, I was totally reliant on the machine gun on my first playthrough.

It seems there are a lot of weapons in this game. I only found the polar star, machine gun, fireball, bubble gun, blade, and rocket launcher on my first playthrough. Where do I get the nemesis and spur? I just picked up the snake, did that make it impossible to get the spur?

For the Spur, you need to bring the Pole Star back to the dude where you first found it when you return to that section of the game. It IS worth every moment of pain you suffer due to punygunness, as it fires the holy wrath of charged shots.

It is pwnage in a small box.
