Breath of Fire 2 - Retranslation

Didn’t know about this until recently, but someone decided to go and retranslate BoF2, since it had a god awful English translation at the hands of Capcom.
Needless to say, it looks pretty damn good. No more fishing lod at least…

Wow, wasn’t that guy sitting on a 100% finished English translation for months? I was sure this was dead. Maybe I’ll even brave playing it again; I truly think there were some parts of BoF2 that had potential for brilliance in the story, but were marred by translation.

While this is totally awesome I don’t know if I can endure a second run through the game. It might be worth a shot though.

Btw, did the GBA port ever try to clean up the translation?

Nope, it was a direct dump with only one or two tweaks to the game’s graphics. Real cop-out.

It looks like there wasn’t much done to the combat, which is tragic. If they were gonna fix a lot of minor stuff, they ought to have made the experience gains higher.

So I’m just done with the Suzie quest. Impression so far:

I like it. I think it’s a very good job. I actually feel the townspeople have a glimpse of character in them now, and Bow/Bosch’s dialogue really does make him stand out in a very good way. It’s still the same old game, but it does flow a lot better in the cutscenes.

And the circus riddles. Damn, those are groan worthy. Kinda like every other English pun in the original Japanese version, very nice.

Also, Turbo Button + knowing how to abuse the shit out of this thing = Much smoother experience.

The only thing about the turbo button is that it makes the random battles feel even more frequent. I already did testing, and from the same spot, moving at the exact same time, you will get into a random battle in the same number of steps whether you’re walking or running. It’s a nice feature, and that’s true in every game, I know. But the random battles were already pretty bad…

You’re not supposed to walk with Turbo on, you just run into shit and walk more than you need. Just toggle it when you enter battle, press Auto, blink once, toggle it off, keep walking. Maybe check your health once in a while.

Why in the world would the turbo button reduce encounters?

Oops. I thought you meant the new run button that you can use in towns and in the field.

Bosch? Lin? Is there any way to change character names or are those permanent? Granted it’s a minor nitpick, and nothing to stop me from trying it, but what’s wrong with Bow and Katt?

Why not? It’s not like they were originally changed because of cultural localization decisions or any remotely legitimate reason, just character crunching. His point regarding “Bosch” is particularily good.

Character crunching? Does that refer to making the names shorter? Cos Katt is longer than Lin. :stuck_out_tongue:

Katt’s original name was the faux-chinese “R/Linpoo/pu”, which sounds like ass no matter how you go about it. He compromised using the BoF5 retroactive consistency logic, same as Bosch. And yeah, “Bow” is a result of not enough space, same for Spar and Jean.

I always fail to understand why people don’t like BoF2’s music. Also, the encounter rate + slow combat can really get jarring. Is it just me or have we discussed the hell out of BoF2 lately?

It wasn’t that bad, you’re right. it’s outrageously terrible.

I have seen worse. At least all of my bases didn’t belong to it.

You should realize that your comparison was like comparing of apples to oranges.

A bad translation of a shooter will only ruin the suspension of disbelief, whereas, a bad translation of an RPG could ruin the entire story if it’s horrendous enough like in BoF2 or FFT.

It varies between a few awesome, many passable and several “oh God my ears please make it stop”. The title music in particular is among one of my favorite themes from SNES RPGs and the lullaby song that plays at the beginning when you go look for Yua is very nice too. However, there’s some really bad songs that unfortunately show up the most, notably the one that plays in just about almost every single village or village-like stop in the game.
