does anyone know of a way to tell if ports are being blocked on your internet connection and perhap even determine what ports are being blocked?
If you have a firewall, all but the most basic ports are closed until you open more. If you don’t have a firewall then all ports on your computer are always open.
If you have a firewall on your router, then log into your router and check the firewall listing. If you have a software firewall, like ZoneAlarm, then you can only configure it to allow programs to access the internet, but not to specifically open any ports.
I don’t have a firewall myself, but I’m not sure what the university is trying to force on me.
Ask whoever maintains the network. You have a right to know how much access you’re being granted, since you are paying for it.
I tried running a port scanner(nmap) on myself, but the stupid thing won’t output specifics, just the fact that some ports are filtered. I’m almost tempted to write a batch file to test each port individually and spit out a bunch of logs. I’m not to big on asking the network admin, because that would likely make them start watching my connection (our admins are lazy until someone draws their attention). That is definitely not something I want to happen given the University’s recent stance on bowing to RIAA etc.
[edit] the fuckers are blocking every port past 1024! No wonder I can’t upload for shit anymore. Back when I first got down here things were nice and open and I could get decent speed, but now the cock biters are pulling a stunt like this…[/edit]
That’s standard. You should be glad FTP works, a lot block that to conserve bandwidth.
