Today I went to the bank to the credit union to cash a check, but I had to go elsewhere. So I went to an actual bank to get the thing cashed. I had to show two ID’s to cash it; one college, the other my driver’s. So the bank teller started writing down the registration number. I really didn’t care about that at all, but then she proceeded to take my finger print and put it on the check. I know it doesn’t seem like much at all, but seriously, doesn’t it seem like we are headed down the slippery slope to a police state at some point? It all seemed orwell-esque to me.
Um, have you even bothered to read the Patriot Act? That’s not even part of it.
The bank teller just told me it was…
Your bank teller is quite wrong. It’s a way to look out for check fraud. It can be done at random to people just as a safety precaution. Your fingerprint is also most likely on your driver’s license in some form or fashion (most likely digital). It’s possible to compare the two in case they think you look too different than the owner of the license.
Now i feel very stupid:thud:
Most of the severe measures of the patriot act, only deal with the privacy of criminals, and those from other countries.
Something as trivial as check-fraud, would not be included in the patriot act.
EDIT-AHHHH! HOLY SHIT! 1000 POSTS! WOOO!

“Criminals”? I take it that you think that everyone who ever gets suspected of a crime has to be guilty of it? What the “Patriot Act” does is eliminate many of the safeguards used when establishing someone’s guilt, like trial by jury and right to due process. It allows trials that are conducted in total secrecy, can convict based on hearsay or suspicions, are run by the military, and are empowered to condemn someone to a secret execution. And the “Patriot Act” does apply to citizens; it says that they may be held indefinitely in military custody without being charged or allowed to see a lawyer, and it lets government agents investigate them without “probable cause.”
Yeah, that’s not part of the Patriot Act. In fact, I did that even before 9-11.

I meant by criminals, those who are suspected of commiting a crime. The patriot act infringes on their rights. Like to due process and such, as you said.
I probably should have said ‘suspects’ instead of criminals. My bad.
Speaking of the Patriot Act.

First of all, this so-called Patriot Act seems completely insane. If the treatment given to the prisoners of Guantanamo Bay is any indication, the authorities shouldn’t be allowed to have that kind of power. Some people there probably don’t have anything to do with terrorism, but the army would rather keep them there istead of admitting it made a mistake. Besides, for people who claim to be so righteous, depriving people of basic human rights seems a hypocrisy to me.
Besides, there days suspects are considered guilty straight from the beginning in too many cases. Some people don’t even know what they’re being charged of, are unable to refute any witnesses or supposed evidence. It reminds me of a cartoonish sentence I once heard, “Don’t worry, you’ll be considered guilty in a completely fair trial.”
That is not a part of the Patriot Act. But don’t let that comfort you, the Patriot Act is much much worse.
And speaking of bizarre security measures, could someone explain to me why I can no longer access my Hotmail account?
I thought, maybe I forgot my password, but I tried EVERY one I use (it’s a short list) and NONE worked. Then I decided to simply change the password, and when it asked the secret question (my pet’s name) it would not accept it either. What the F? I haven’t had that many pets, either. Most annoying of all, I got blocked from trying anymore after just three failed attempts. Whoop de doo. -_-

I once had spyware on my computer that did the same thing. Have you tried Ad-Aware?
