Sorc made a really good point. There are some people who are just used to mashing buttons and don’t like the laborous “hitting buttons in a particular nonrandom order.” :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, Dai makes a point that I agree with about FF7 :stuck_out_tongue: I guess though, with that in mind, it really comes down to what you play them for. I personally like gameplay over everything. Cos I mean, hell, it IS a game, you know :stuck_out_tongue: If the GAME isn’t fun, then why are you playing it? Or, that’s just how I look at it.

And Sorcerer, it’s not necesarily so irrelevant…like, I think part the excitement in some games (fighting games in particular) is successfully approaching the enemy and attacking them without getting hit. Almost every RPG (And it isn’t a bad thing in all instances) is more like “your turn!” “ok, your turn!” and well, a lot of RPGs, especially ones we’ve seen in the past like, 4-6 years, are just poor examples of such.

After suffering a younger brother for so long I have established that listening to a brother is the wrong thing to do, he plays games and uses cheats on his first go. I rarely use cheats at all.

“Fun” is a very subjective experience.

And, by the way, I’d like to point out that I didn’t particularly care for FF7. Not enough to finish it, anyway.

Which is weird, because it seems that it really should have been right up my alley. Grim, sci-fi like setting (well, Midgar, at least). World ruled by an evil corporation. Open ended “romance” storyline. Actually had a black guy in it. Killing off one of the main party characters (especially THE primary love interest. Good shock, and big balls. Props there). I dunno…I guess…I guess I just don’t like Sephiroth showing up and taking away the “main evil” status away from the evil Shinra Corporation.
I dunno.

Kaiser- I would have liked FFVII a lot more if it was about Midgaard. It was much more interesting than any of the rest of the world- and having it first kinda spoiled the fun for me.

Oh- and the ending sucks.

Still one of the best FFs out there. Doesn’t mean much.

Yea, it’s exactly that “your turn” “ok, now your turn!” concept that people get bored with. They don’t want to wait their turn, they want to chop you into pieces before you can think.

Kingdom Hearts is pretty good if you don’t want FF style battles.

Nah, it’s just monotonous. Selecting the same command repeatedly, then waiting for your turn again.

It’s why I like fighting games more than RPGs now. I control what they do, when they do it, where the target is, from what direction it comes from, etc. It’s all real time, and it all relys on my skill, not a roll of a dice or a comparison of numbers. Action RPGs give the same feeling.

I agree with SG; I find gameplay’s more important than the story. Who wants to play a game with an epic story if advancing through it is tedious? But if a game’s fun but has an absolutely ridiculous story, you’d still want to play it simply because it’s fun.

Real time (and no, I don’t consider ATB real time) makes you feel more involved, and it’s not just holding the X button to skip through easy battles to advance the often mediocre at best storylines. I get more interaction flipping the pages of a book than I do playing most RPGs.

The only RPGs I truly liked had active side-scrolling or 3-D battle systems where every time you go into a battle it’s like a fun mini-game, not a bunch of pressing “Yes, I want to Attack”, “Yes I want to use a potion” bullshit. (FFX is an exception; I loved the story :P)
