The characters in a Japanese game actually LOOK Japanese to those who do not spend much time surrounded by those with Asian features.

I shouldn’t say that the characters in FFX look Japanese, but Asian rather. Dif areas of asia have slightly dif traits, but Asian traits are Asian traits. Wakka, Tidus, Yuna, Rikku are very asian.
Rikku looked a bit more Christina Spearsese rather than Asian.

It has been my first reaction as well. Shion looked too much like the stereotypical clumsy engineer woman with her huge glasses anyway.
