Now that their high-end models are only 50 dollars more than the Wii?
On one hand I say it’s very likely, on the other hand, Nintendo’s current fanbase is basically everyone who doesn’t play games, which is obviously a larger market than those that do.
Unless MS and Sony find a way to tap into the Wii’s market base, no. I have no doubt they’ll try though. I smell copy cat wii fits and the like coming to the xbox and the ps3.
You have to be careful when talking about “the market”. There isn’t only 1 market. There are many markets. As it stands, Nintendo has mastered a market that MS and Sony spent years saying didn’t even exist. They have their work cut out for them. We won’t know what’ll happen until the technology is out, people see how it works and the publishers try to do interesting things with them.
Keep in mind that the vast majority of the products that were highly successful on the Wii were made by Nintendo. Therefore, MS and Sony can’t count on 3rd parties to actually get the work done for them - something that Sony especially is keen on doing.
Since the Natal tech will be brought to PC’s as well as the xbox, I believe the way Natal will evolve will be very different.
I think that this is going to affect Nintendo pretty harshly - last month was the first month for a drop in Wii Hardware Sales. I’ve seen rumors of some sort of new Xbox hardware (Xbox 180?), where as Nintendo has, besides Gameboys, never released updated hardware. Anyway, people that buy Xbox’s and PS3’s buy games. As someone mentioned all the most successful titles on Wii are made by Nintendo (and Guitar Hero I guess).
I don’t think it’s gonna be a problem. As cool as Motion Plus is I don’t think it’s enough. PS3 is about to skyrocket.
Who said anything about it being portable? I don’t think Natal is primarily a game technology anyway - I was talking about a Xbox Slim? Regardless, honestly, most people I know don’t use their Wii that much. I bet if you look at Wii software sales during this 360/PS3 holiday slugfest, they’re gonna be real, real low.
I doubt Sony is going to catch up to Microsoft let alone Nintendo. The PS3 has a limited supply of (good) exclusive titles, and any titles that are multi-platform are preferable on the 360.
Actually, the next MGS game is being developed for PS3, 360, and PC. …But then again, I think MGS4 was lame-balls (at least what I’d played of it), so I guess I’m not too excited either way.
360 has a pretty superb lineup of exclusives… Fable, Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect (unless 2 was announced for PS3, which I haven’t heard) and many more. All of which are pretty damn popular (and great new IPs, all those titles brought something new to their genre - something PS3 exlcusives like Killzone and Resistence don’t. It’s there though, LBP is pretty cool to see). Sooooooo… since the PS3 slim was announced though I think developers are going to be more excited to create new intellectual properties for Sony because the lower price is easily going to extend it’s user base, which is definitely what’s been hurting it. Although I think they made a major gaffe in somehow not including PS2 backwards compatibility.
Realistically, I don’t think MS and Sony will catch up to Nintendo. However, there something to consider here. The Wii already has a pretty good handle on the causal fanbase, whereas the 360 and PS3 are going for more of the “core” gamers (such a stupid term…). Of course, Sony and MS will actually try to entice the causal market with their new gizmos and whatnot, but they won’t be out for some time.
The Wii has some pretty good numbers, and they’re starting to slow down a bit now. But, unless it gets some much needed exclusives that are worth playing, it could suffer. With the recent price cuts on the PS3 and 360, I’d expect their numbers to go up quite a bit, with this becoming more obvious as the holidays roll around. However, the PS3 is starting to gain some steam, and not quite the failure most thought that it was going to be when it first came out. And the 360 does have quite a few exclusive games that people will go for.
New Super Mario Bros Wii comes out at the end of this year, Super Mario Galaxy 2 comes out next year, as does Metroid: Other M. The last one I’m particularly waiting for, and I’m sure what ‘core’ gamers that have a Wii will be very happy to play it.
I’m sure MS and Sony will catch up, but I don’t think they’ll ever surpass the Wii in terms of units sold. I’m not really interested in getting into the hardcore vs casual debate since the definitions of each are so subjective there’s really no point.
And really, does it matter? I know there are some gamers out there chomping at the bit for anything they can use to attack their ‘rival’ consoles because they so desperately want their console to ‘win’, but that’s pretty foolish in the end. We should all just enjoy our games and be glad we have three viable console options to game however we wish, but I guess it’s hard to ignore the urge to look for reasons to be combative and disagree with other people.
Kinda like what I just did by derailing a console discussion into a philosophical debate. Tsk tsk, me.
Here’s a better question: Do they even need to? It’s not like either of them are hurting for money. I’m pretty sure even the PS3 (and games) has turned a profit.
(In before someone posts statistics proving me wrong.)
