Some one said something like “‘Mark doesn’t give a shit about comic book fans Millar.’” He’s been involved in some seminal comic book stories, and I like the KA comic from what I’ve seen, so why the hate?
BTW, it opens in Dublin a week before it opens in the rest of the country and UK (this Friday) and a month before the US. Wild. Even if it does tank and I walk out hating it, i’ll still feel like the shit for seeing a movie a month before everyone else.
Who the hell is Mark Millar?
It is me who you’re quoting DR. And while I was exaggerating a little, the fact is that Millar (from everything I know about him, including stuff HE HIMSELF has said) is a huge egotistical jerk. A talented, commercially successful jerk, but still a jerk.
Just read his rant at the end of WANTED (the comic, not the movie) where he basically blasts fans who didn’t like the comic, and points out how they will buy his comics anyway.
There’s also a story (told by Millar in an interview) of how he kicked the crap out of a costumed person at a Con once while drunk; turns out the boy was the son of the Con manager. The way Millar told it, he apparently expects US to feel sorry for him. (Of course, he could have made the whole thing up, just to rile up people. Still doesn’t make him likable.)
Most of Millar’s comics are about deconstructing superheroes, usually by having them do cruel or extreme things, or by just focusing on the villains instead. KICK ASS is precisely about people trying to live as superheroes in the real world but only getting hurt in the process. Millar CAN write more moderately than that…CIVIL WAR wasn’t that bad, although he still was pretty cynical- but most of his own creator-owned stuff feels pathetic to me (and many other people.) But hey, if people like it, then fine. Just keep him away from mainstream comics.
Don’t worry overmuch, people who’re interested in it will have probably [strike]torrented it[/strike] gotten tickets for pre-screenings.
