A review by me.
Oh… my…God…
Best game I’ve ever played. Fanboyism aside, it is a technical and narrative masterpiece. There was always an epic scope about the series that was never fully realized due to the hardware’s limitations. Here, it is fully realized.
From a visual standpoint, it’s like nothing ever seen. The only thing that reminded me that it wasn’t absolutely realistic was the fact I only own an SD TV with regular A/V cables. In game cutscenes blended (in some cases literally) with the action so well, the only thing that let me know I was in control was my guages.
From an audio standpoint, this is among the top 3 game soundtracks I’ve ever heard. The voice acting is top notch, and thankfully, all of the game’s heaviest moments are masterfully handled, ESPECIALLY by David Hayter. (HE must play Snake in the MGS movie. Him and no one else).
From a narrative standpoint…
First of all, if you do not care about the story (Why the fuck are you playing it if you don’t?) Dont bother. The cutscenes are long and they are frequrent. All surviving characters return and all their stories come to an end, some bitter, some sweet. To those familiar with the series, to those who’ve followed it from the original Metal Gear, Fan Service abounds. Especially on a certain snowy Island… It is a complex story with all sorts of loose ends, and here they are neatly tied up, completely and satisfactorily.
From a gameplay standpoint…
Ok, if you don’t care about the story, play it anyway, because there is still a fantastic game to be played. Unfortunately, you will have to sit through hours of pesky narration (though you can skip over it). The sneaking bit isn’t emphasized as much here, as the option to run and gun is supported by drastically improved camera, a vast amount of customizable weapons and a new over-the-shoulder aiming system. There are many moments here which will remain on my greatest-moments-in-gaming list for years.
Any complaints are minor at best. For instance, this is Snake’s last mission. The world torn asunder by technology and and War and a greater power. It’s a very dreary atmosphere, as alluded to by Snake’s opening monologue. There are attempts to lighten it up with Humor, and for the most part, with the exception of the characters’ amazement with the current PS3 technology, they fail. Thankfully, it’s relatively seldom.
Best game I’ve ever played. I’ll be thinking about the closing hours for days.
