Why is that flowery thingy monster called Malboro (or is it Marlboro). Are they hitting at the cigarettes (because of bad breath)? If so how come they haven’t been sued yet.
Why would a big name cigarette company bother suing Square over something so trivial as a monster that happens to have the same name?

Because they can!!!
Zolom, just because they can doesn’t mean it’ll be worth it. Do you realize how much work goes into a lawsuit?

Do you realise how much they can squeeze out of a large electronic entertainment co for trademark infringement?

Tell me, on what grounds would they sue Square? Until you give me a valid reason, I’ll just think of you as a trigger-happy moron.

Moron?? Beg your pardon!! I just asked a simple question, I wouldn’t support a cigarette company in any lawsuit. Actually I always thought naming a monster with bad breath Marlboro is hillarious. And if you go back one or two posts I just mentioned on what grounds they can sue: trademark, do you understand what that is dear?
Well, if you want to get into the name game, Marlboro is a city in east central Massachusetts that was settled in 1657. So really, the cigarette company DID NOT come up with the name Marlboro, but 17th century settlers did. Maybe the city of Marlboro, Masachusetts should sue both the cigarette company AND Square, hm?

yes, I do. But tell me, did you know that Marlboro was a CITY? Which basically means that Marlboro has no grounds on which to sue someone, since the name has existed long before the company came into being.
And I called you a moron because nearly everyone meet thinks that suing people is easy money, and it’s just gotten on my nerves by now.
Edit: JW beat me to it.
Heh, in most cases, it’s more trouble suing someone then it’s worth. Hiring the lawyer, setting everything up, etc., etc.

Exactly. And there is the chance that if you lose, the other side might have put up a countersuit, meaning you LOSE. A LOT. All in all, it’s best to just let things be, instead of bothering with all that.
they named it malboro because it was the first thing that came to mind. there.
Oh, come on, guys. It was obviously a joke and not he obviously didn’t think that any company was going to sue Square over something like that. No need to be so hostile.
In general, smoking causes you to have a REALLY stinky breath. Our lovely comedians at Squaresoft thought that they should make a monster with “bad breath”. It ended up being an icky tentacle monster called Marboro that has an attack called “bad breath”. The end.
And incase you didn’t notice, it isn’t Marlboro. It has been either Marboro (FF7) or Malboro (FF8/X)
Now, didn’t that clear things up a bit?
Cless, he seemed rather serious to me. And I don’t think he thought that anyone WOULD sue Square, he was wondering why they hadn’t already.
How long has the tobacco company been around? Longer than FF?
Much longer.
Ironically enough, the Molbols/Malboros were called “Bad Oscar” and “Evil Oscar” in FF6, which is a riff on Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street, whom they resemble. And Sesame Street hasn’t sued Square either. 8p
And the people who made Star Trek haven’t sued Enix for making Star Ocean 1 and 2, which are far more blatant ripoffs. Basically, the video games are so obscure (compared to “mainstream”) that the chances of anybody actually associating the stuff in the game with the real-life counterpart are close to nil. Hell, chances are the companies in question have never even heard of these games. 8p
Although I wouldn’t say that companies wouldn’t sue because it’s too much trouble. Does anyone remember when Esso sued Kellogg’s (or was it the other way round) because Tony the Tiger resembled the Esso Tiger? That one got thrown out, but it did go into the court system. O_o Some companies will sue for any pretext, if they have enough cash to hire swanky lawyers to do so.

Maybe for a person, but certainly not for a big corporation.
Anyway, I don’t know where I said I supported tobacco companies or wondered why they haven’t sued (as in WANTING them to sue). I just thought the name was a bit weird, the lawsuit thing was an afterthought, a joke! Gosh that’s what you get for talking to teenagers … you get called a moron. How raging are your hormones people, chill. And it’s called malboro or marboro (I think) because of the l/r problem in Japanese.

Yeah, how convenient. A teenager acts up, blame it on hormones. Let me tell you, zolom, hormones do not affect me like you think they would. I am one of the most levelheaded persons I have ever met, and I treat my elders with respect when I see that they deserve it,.
