As I sit here chatting online, I hear my dad complaining that coke (the drink) isn’t good for you, and that he drinks so much of it that his belly is full of it and he has problems bending over and stuff like that. I say to him, “Well dad, why don’t you just stop drinking coke?” No answer so far, and that was about 10 minutes ago. It suddenly accured to me that I constantly hear people say things in a similar fashion to this, such as complaining about being fat, but sitting on their ass eating cheetos. People complaining that they suck at something, but not practicing enough to get any better. Why do people do this?
Step 1: Switch him to fountain pop.
Step 2: Slowly water down as time passes.
Step 3: It’ll eventually be nothing but water.
And people do this because they’re lazy idiots who like to bitch.
I blame
1: TV
2: Internet Pornography

That was invalid.
I think it did not even matter.
It is like trying to die when your father does?

It’s easy to recognize that you’d like to change something, but difficult to change. In terms of the coke thing, your dad recognizes that it’s prob’ly not the healthiest thing in the world for him, but he’s in the habit of drinking it, so really doesn’t know how to stop. (or more likely, he doesn’t really want to - he just felt like saying he SHOULD.)
Seriously complaining about drinking soda is pretty silly. And saying “I’m fat” while eating a bunch of junk food is pretty silly too, unless you’re joking or something. But losing weight is alot more difficult than getting water instead of coke.
Edit: Anyway, in general, I think it’s people taking the easy way out. “I’m smart enough to know this is bad for me, but don’t feel like changing.”
People are weak.
“People don’t complain because they are weak, they are weak so they can complain” -Lans Tartare , Tactics Ogre . I love that line.
It always takes less effort to diagnose a problem than to rectify it.
The path of least resistance.
Especially when you can get “credit” for being a good person in the eyes of others for at least giving voice to one of your faults. Without undertaking the laborious task of developing discipline and deciding to take action and change yourself (often without instant gratification, be it a pat on the back or the quick results we are so often conditioned to always expect).
The first step is admitting you have a problem. Some people (a lot of people) just don’t feel like going for a walk.
Because it’s easier to complain than to actually change what bugs you. People are weak and lazy.

One of the few times I will agree with your somewhat negative outlook, Sin.
A lot of people love to complain, yet i have found few people who will really act upon their complaints. Thise who do, I see as being truly good people, and I have all the rerspect in the world for them.

Hate to disappoint you, but I’m not one of those people. I actually get off my ass and workout. When I don’t accomplish what I say I’m going to, I reflect on that and it makes me feel weak an dishonorable. So I do try my best do things, otherwise I discipline myself.
Ok, there’s my two cent.
The way I see it, a lot of it has to do with blame too.
“Oh sitting here doing nothing but drinking this coke is gonna get me fat.Damn that coke”. Well obviously I’m just using some examples I’ve read mixed in with this thread…it’s always about something else that is unhealthy, not the person, it seems. If that’s the case, everything in this world is unhealthy and not good for us. Take for example, it has been stated that eating deep fried food, causes cancer. Sitting out in the sun too long, causes cancer. Smoking causes cancer.Well, everything does! Not a lot of people have the intelligence to think, Oh I shouldn’t eat deep fried food, or Oh I should watch my sun intake, or Oh I shouldn’t be around smoke or should smoke less, and thus they don’t act upon it. A lot of it has to do with weakness, but also routine. It’s very hard to change your everyday life and get healthy, especially if you are used to a certain food or whatever over the years.
Complaining is fun! At least complaining about the clothes people are wearing at the Eurovision Song Contest. =P Anyway, people have a habit of seeking pity on smaller scales, because other people will almost always try to cheer them up, often using compliments, and we all love to hear how good we are. Complaining is like backwards boasting - instead of appearing egocentric, we get other people to help water our ego.
Again this quote comes into play:
Man is intelligent. People are stupid.
That and too lazy.
It’s all a matter of will. If people want to change and try hard enough, they will succeed, sooner or later. But it they just sit around and complain, well, it’ll be a waste of time.
I must say, Sin, that is the most excellent quote ever. And yeah, from what everyone has said, it’s like “People = lazy”. And I must also say that people say it’s hard to lose weight, that willpower is not something people have a lot of. I find it fairly easy to lose weight, I guess others might not.
It doesn’t require an effort to complain: Humans enjoy doing things that don’t require an effort. The group includes, in addition to complaining: Watching tv, eating snacks, and sleeping.

Heh, yeah that quote is only too true. I suppose it’s easier to piss&moan than it is to do something. =P
Laziness can be a very ugly foe. I’m usually really active, though.

You read my mind.
My personal motto happens to be “Suffer in silence.”
If nothing can be done about it, than there is no point to complaining. If you can do something about it, then do it, and stop complaining. Essentially, don’t complain.
And I agree with Evangelion, that a lot of it has to do with the blame game. For instance the creation of “disorders.” “My kid is really annoying and bounces off the wall, so he has ADHD.” Maybe you should check his sugar intake? or “I’m to scared to go out and get a job because of my race, so I have Post-Traumatic Slavery Disorder.” (Seriously, Some guy made this up…) While chemical imbalances can cause some physical effects of these “disorders” most of them are 100% pure blame-game. An excuse to not do anything about it and sit back and complain.
Whiners just need to sit down and shut up, and make something for themselves.

My favorite line from Tactics Ogre is “Let’s make like a tree and get out of here!” Lol! Trees don’t get out of here! They LEAF! Ahh, funny stuff.
I mean
Yeah Ath, a lot of the times it’s just easier said than done. I think it’s very admirable to see people spot their problems AND take action to fix them. Personally, sometimes I try to, and well, sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don’t. I’m sure that you, and probly everyone else here can think of a problem or two that they have with their character or physique that they have acknowledged, but have done nothing about. I bet most of the people here do complain about it too; I know I do. It’s human, it happens. Don’t call people on being human.
