Where have all the Vagrant Stories gone?

Seems like everytime I read Square news, it’s always about Final Fantasy something, or the thousand of derivatives of that game, or the new remake, or the new thing based on previous material. Three spinoffs of FF13, 2 new Tactics games, FF12: Revenant Wings, Compilation of FF7. Blankity-blank Advance. If you look at the Squeenix home page it’s all games that are sequels or remakes or sequels of remakes. You know Square there are other games out there to make. Remember Vagrant Story? That was a good one. Or Parasite Eve? How about Ehrgeiz even? I got lots of good hours out of that. You can make games based on material that’s not Final Fantasy and people will still buy it, you know. In fact, the FF moniker probably turns off some sales, because people are too intimidated by the franchise, think they have to have foreknowledge of the games to get any pleasure out of it.</rant>

The past year has been nuts. They’ve crossed the line from “please the fans” into “milk it for all it’s worth and then more”.

You liked Ehrgeiz?

But yes, it’s definitely true. While VS’s gameplay… or rather, the way weaponry efficiency was managed was down right atrocious, it could have been a really great game. A sequel (sequel, not remake) would be absolutely perfect considering the original game is a prelude to the “Vagrant’s Story”. I said before that it was something like if they had given FFT an absolutely flawless localization, but had cut the game off at the end of chapter one.

So yeah, we know that team seems to be on the lead within Squeenix right now if they were chosen to make a leading franchise title, why not putting them to work on something they are good at?

Also Bahamut Lagoon, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Dragon Quests, Live a Live, Secret of Evermore, Seiken Densetsu, the Saga games, Treasure Hunter G.

A good idea would be something original for a change. They used to produce plenty of new games. Perhaps the production costs have risen but I’d rather not see Square become something like the royal families of Europe, inbreeding and all.

Hell even a SaGa game could be useful right about now. Instead of yet another rehash of FFs I & II

I mean come on. I bet Fighter and Black Mage are feelin’ like Meagman and Ryu right now.

On this note where are the other Ogre Battle games? Weren’t there suppose to be like 7 of these games.

Square is indeed playing it a little too safe, and risks burning out the FF-playing fans’ interest. All businesses must experiment with new products even as they uphold the old ones, if they want to be there when the next fad catches on.

That said, if there’s an old, non-FF game I’d like to see remade, it’s SAGA FRONTIER. I love this game, from its original ideas to its engaging characters, but man, the graphics rob it of the full impact it could’ve had.

If Square should make a sequal to ANY underrated game of theirs that’s been hidden in the shadows, it should be the side scroller Einhander! That game is awesome! Great soundtrack too.

TRUE SEQUEL TO SUPER MARIO RPG, HELLZ YEAH!

If Saga Frontier’s graphics rob it of its full impact, what about The 7th Saga? wink A remake of that would fully revive the glorious masochistic tradition of old school RPGs. What I’d like it a translation/remake of Romancing Saga 2 and Mystic Ark, the sequel to 7th Saga.

In all fairness last year Squeenix did revist VP so it’s not like there forgetting the love.:kissy:

That said, I know of a few good games that seem to look a bit hungry. For one a Soul Blazer game would be nice to feed the hunger.:hint:

SaGa Frontier was the only game I ever sold. Bought FF Tactics with it. Best deal I ever made. I thought that game was awful. X-X

Another Chrono game would make everyone go nuts, especially if they really tried to get back to their roots on it.

Oh hell that would be awesome, but the problem would be getting the dream team together. Just using the name “Chrono” and simmilar scenario wouldn’t be really important without having at least some of the original staff. At the very least Masato Kato and Mitsuda would have to be in it.

Well, Mitsuda and Kato are freelancers who’ve recently worked with Square Enix (Kato on Children of Mana), and Akira Toriyama is still with Square Enix (Dragon Quest series). It’s definitely doable.

Don’t forget that Kato also did the scenarios for Chrono Cross, so his involvement doesn’t necessarily mean much if we consider the backlash against that. 8p

Well, I LIKED CC >:(

Just kidding. But while I recognize the faults in the game, let’s remember that the whole project suffered from severe budget and time cuts and much of what they planned to include was cut off (MAGUS WAS GONNA BE IN IT DAMNIT!). Kato has done great things in other games as well, like in Xenogears.

In any case, if there are irreplaceable parts in anything that involves a script, those are the scenario director and the writer. I could still feel the same sense of familiarity in Cross as I did in Trigger, just like Xenosaga Ep.I felt similar to Xenogears, and in contrast, how Ep.II & III felt different.

If you want to please old-time fans when doing sequels of long-lost games, one of the most important things is for the new game to “feel” like the original since nostalgia plays a huge role, even if graphically and technically they are completely different works. That’s what I’m getting at.

By the way, frankly out of the dream team, Toriyama is the one I feel is the most replaceable. I wouldn’t mind if the characters had his style, but I wouldn’t feel disappointed if they didn’t either. I found Nobuteru Yuki’s designs for Cross perfectly fine, and for some reason, Serge remains in my head as the most visually pleasing main character I’ve ever seen (Don’t ask me why, I’m not sure). The only thing I wouldn’t accept would be Nomura getting the job. If I see Crono come back wearing leather jackets and Magus turned into a bishonen like Sephiroth/Ansem/Xemnas, I’m taking a plane to Japan just to kill the guy.

(Thought bubble) “Damn, how did that first rule go? You don’t talk about…”

And I think Tactics is the worst FF ever (except for the Job system, which I think was the best in FF so far.) Different strokes and all that, I guess. :stuck_out_tongue:

Shhh! Don’t give him any ideas.

The company I work at has the philosophy “innovate or die” (a bit fatalistic, but poignant nonetheless). It means if you don’t think of new and original things, people have no reason to keep buying/upgrading the product.

There are rumors that Square-Enix is off loading two of their franchises. We might see a sequel/spin-off/remake of one of the games mentioned above, by another VG maker.
Chronotriger 2 by Mistwalker?

Parasite Eve is still one of my favorates of all time. Unique storyline, unique gameplay, unique protogonist…all in all, a very unique game. Aya’s so pretty~

ahem I also enjoyed PE2 very much, depsite the fact that it was a bit less RPG and a bit more survival horror. A lot of people didn’t, but I did. I would very much love to see a next-gen Parasite Eve.
