Whatever happened to single player?

More and more games are being made with multiplayer as well as singleplayer mode. Okay, I like that. It’s fun to play with other people. However, now it seems like multiplayer has taken precidence over singleplayer, and that is NOT a good thing, in this humble gamer’s eyes.

The big problem with multiplayer is that it requires other people. Let me say that again: OTHER PEOPLE. There won’t always be other people. With the internet, you could play other people anytime, but you’d still need to deal with a lot of issues, such as cheaters, pay-to-play, disconnects, interruptions, etc. Console games are even harder. Since my main genres are RPGs and Survival Horror, my multiplayer options are few. And after that, the only other person who plays games in my house is my brother, and he mostly plays RPGs.

Then, there’s the people that want to play alone. Not everyone wants to play against others all the time. For example, I like to practice a fighter before I go around challenging people; it’s rude to just have someone challenge me when I’m only starting out.

There’s more I want to say, but that’s enough for now.

Multiplayer is for people with friends.
You have no friends; therefore, you suck.

I’m screwin with you :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

7 words for you:

Doom 3
Deus Ex 2
Half-Life 2

single player is coming back, baby.

Single player is very much alive, you just must not be looking right.

And you can do more in multiplayer than just play with friends. You can, say, make new friends? And the only way you get better in any game is to play it, so whats the deal with it being rude if random people challenge you? It’s not rude, you aren’t wearing a sign that says newbie - how are they supposed to know? Besides, just play them and see how things operate. Score isn’t always everything.

Ironic, I usually complain about the LACK of multiplayer games, at least for consoles. The only ones I can find are sports and racing, which I don’t particularly care for. I would get HALO if I had an X-box, but I only have a PS2, so that’s out of the question. Oh well.

FFTA’s single player! And MegaMan X7! And, uh, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle … I mean … D’oh!

Maybe you shouldn’t pay more attention to Chobits than whatever post you’re making.

Chii?

You heard me!

There are just more MP games than there used to be. SP is still pretty strong, like most console RPGs are sp. Sure, FFTA has mp capabilities, but the game is essentially SP despite the little bonus.

If you like single player, don’t bother with any RTS games. Most people only care about the mulitplayer mode. Most people like multiplayer because there isn’t a set AI.

For single player, games like DMC are good, and most FPS PS2 games I know are single player. What Merl mentioned is good.

Timesplitters 2. Nuff’ said.

Single player mode is not dead, you’re just looking in all the wrong places and at the wrong games. nod, nod

Most of the games I own is single player games: I don’t like to share kills. All the blood shall go into my bloodwine, no one elses.

SP always has its virtues.

I play Diablo II in SP all the time because the drops are better.

I still enjoy SSBM on one player.

Rah.

WHat they said, plus Tron 2.0, and The Tom Clany games.

I’m not a huge fan of Penny Arcade, but this made me laugh. :mwahaha:

I finished Link to the Past perfectly (got everything, didn’t die once).

Now it’s just an expensive coaster, because I have no friends. sob

Who says single player is dead when you have fun games like Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Splinter Cell, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ico, and Star Wars Knight of the Old Republic. Granted I have XBox Live, but it doesn’t mean single player is gone from this house.

For half-life 2, doom 3 and deus ex 2, you guys better be ready to have a seriously performant systems.

And on a side note, I agreed with TD :stuck_out_tongue:
