I’ve been here a long time, but haven’t participated or observed enough to comment about how things have changed. I will comment on the status quo, however. There seems to be a bit more chatter lately, but much of it is one person whose posts generally aren’t worth reading. You basically have two active moderators who are heavy handed at times; if a thread gets “out of line” in their opinion, they lock it, even when it has a lot of life. For example, when that RP Girl was going at it with Hades - that stuff was hilarious and was even pulling some older posters out of the woodwork. I didn’t see any harm for that thread to continue, it was pure entertainment, which is why this forum is even here now.
If you sort posts by responses, you see a majority of the most active threads have been locked. That stifles members who were enjoying the discussion / argument, and contributes to sucking the life out of a forum. Now if there’s a post saying how cool or awesome the mods are, it’s sure to be stickied. But if someone bumps an old thread for discussing, it gets modded for necro-posting…why? Was it adding to the clutter of the 2 new threads that were created this month?
The moderation is strange to me, because the only two active mods (984 & Sin) care enough to enforce rules and lock threads like this is a high traffic forum, but they don’t care enough to update the board template, or even ask for volunteers to do it. Unless they’ve done it somewhere else, but I haven’t seen it. It’s like they’re saying “this ship is going down, but it’s going down on our terms, and we won’t have it any other way.”
If you think the moderation on this forum is heavy handed, you’re absolutely delusional. People get away with a lot more here than they do at forums like the GameFAQs boards, but they also can’t go SomethingAwful batshit insane.
Just posting nonsense doesn’t contribute anything to the forum. It’s not enthralling. It doesn’t draw in new members. It’s probably more likely to drive people away. Yeah, sure, there have been some statements that the Agora is basically a little Troll Cave (probably true to some extent), but allowing threads like one where all it is is some stupid girl going on and on about how she would stab Hades if they ever met… Yeah, no. That’s stupid, no matter what you think. For fuck’s sake, I locked a necroed thread that was FIVE YEARS OLD. It wasn’t like he brought back some Holy Grail; it was just a stupid thread about stupid Dragonessa posting a stupid picture of stupid trolls trying to make a stupid statement. Stupid.

BTW, 33 new threads in April. While it’s not ‘booming business’, it’s not ‘2 a month’ either.

Asking a volunteer would require giving them full forum control, and I don’t think anyone is too keen with that idea. And as for ‘active moderators’ I see eight people who count. So I have to ask: Where do you get all those stats of yours anyway?
I wouldn’t say that the mods are heavy handed at all. Most of what the mods do nowadays is delete spam. And yeah, necroposting isn’t against any of the rules. But when you have nothing interesting to add to the topic, why do it?
@The 984: the girl stabbing Hades was probably the best thread ever; it had endless potential. And she posted pictures of herself, which is more than any of the rpgc girls do. As far as “heavy handed”, I stand by my observation that for a forum with this amount of traffic and no affiliation, mod intervention is high. I could certainly be, and probably am delusional about this.
@zero: OK - 20 new threads a month in the main forum on average? Half the people who regularly post here are either a mod or a super mod or an admin. But there’s only two people doing the enforcing (or regular posts), from what I’ve observed. I don’t see what’s so scary about giving someone rights to add a logo to the page or create a few themes or whatever, but are you even looking for someone? Half the staff doesn’t even post, the other half doesn’t have the time or desire - why not at least look for someone new to maybe breathe a little life into the place?
Threads that are nothing but stupid death threats will be closed every time.
And yes, you’re delusional. Did you know that Nulani is the most active mod around? She’s deleted TONS of spam. The mod logs even show that. Did you know that this year, we’ve only had nine closed threads? Three of those were necros. Another one was a blatant request for a keygen or something. That leaves five closed threads over about 3 and 2/3 months. So just slightly over one closed thread per month. Let’s look at those five.

So. Five threads. 3 and 2/3 months. Only three of those were on the main forum. And GSG was the common factor. It’s not mods, dude. You’re fucking delusional.
After a quick glance, it seemed there were 2-3 locked threads on each page of the main forum as I scrolled through. With 30 threads on each page, that would be about 10%, which I considered excessive. A second glance shows there are 8/150, which is 5%. That excludes any that were deleted. 5%, 10%…how delusional am I?
Still very, especially when you factor out five, six, seven year old threads that got necroed. Your 8/150 actually goes back only a week longer than my time frame. So guess what. That 8/150 includes the four necroed threads. So we’re down to four threads closed for stupidity over what is now basically a four month period. One thread a month. Huh. So with your figures, that would be four threads closed in the same time 146 threads were posted. Or 2.7%. Yeah, I can’t believe we close 2.7% of all threads. That’s just downright Sinistralian of us. Or, once again, you’re wrong. Yeah you’re wrong.
By the way, the one additional closed thread you had that I didn’t include? THIS! WOW! I CAN’T BELIEVE WE CLOSED SUCH A PROMISING THREAD! IMAGINE WHAT IT COULD HAVE BECOME!
Edit: As for the deleted threads, they were of the “GET BIGGER PENISES NOW! PLEASURE HER LONGER!” variety. So there’s no need to include them in the figures.
I’d say these forums are laid back. The threads that are being closed are mindless drivel from repeat-offenders that would have typically been banned in a more active atmosphere (me included).
Edit: The only time I remember a mod going too far was when said mod deleted posts that were on topic inside of a thread because said mod didn’t like the posts, but I remember said mod apologized.
