What do you think about this FFVII spinoff?

We have a thread here about FFVII being overrated. Well, it is obvious that no one at Square Enix thinks that the game is hyped too much. That explains all the spin-offs coming out lately. All of you heard about Advent Children.

(warning: major spoilers)

Some of you know about Dirge of Cerberus

But here comes another FFVII baby: Before Crisis. This time SE is doing a prequel to FFVII, trying to imitate George Lukas and his Star Wars.

Before Crisis follows the adventures of The Turks. FFVII fans will recognize them as the gang that was in Shinra’s service throughout the game. Although they were allied with the baddies in VII, they were likeable and essentially good people. This time around they’re the good guys and are up against – wait for it – Avalanche.

Just one problem guys:

Unfortunately, for those of us that do not live in Japan or own an F900, it seems like it’ll be a real long time before the game comes out in our neck of the woods (if at all).

I would like your comments, opinions (good, bad or ugly) on all those FFVII offshoots coming out lately and almost simultaneously.

edit:
Chronologically (development and release) Before Crisis precedes Dirge of Cerberus. In fact, it’s being Beta-tested in Japan as I write this. There is even someone working on a walkthrough while playing BC

This has been around already. Expect some flaming. Me, I don’t really care one way or another, I’m not gonna buy something for a phone unless I hear it’s the best thing ever.

Why the hell would someone want to see something like that? What are we going to watch? Zack banging Aeris? Cloud failing in is training? And who the heck cares about the Turks?

Info about Before Crisis has been around for months… way before Dirge of Cerberus. I’m not really happy about it… there’s so no way I’m going to be able to get FFCompendium info on a cell-phone game. >_<

Bet? It’s pretty much a guarentee that other people will start to FAQ it. You may have to rely on the goodness of others moreso than with the others, but there’s no reason you/PJ can’t add it to the FFC. :stuck_out_tongue:

I was about to start a “Whats your favorite FF thread”. It hasnt been done for at least a month

Cidofas,

The most interesting twist in Before Crisis is how it utilizes the properties of a mobile phone. Materia is an integral part of the game and players will need to use the F900’s camera and phone features to make the most out of it. To activate the various types of material, you must take a picture of an object of a similar color.

Its almost interactive. You dont find it interesting, if not original?
.

I don’t understand Square Enix sometimes… Why not just stick with what works?

Because then they’d be in the same situation Enix was in when they released Dragon Warrior VII. They stuck with a proven game formula, and the fans bitched about unoriginality. But whenever they try something unique, the fans bitch about messing with their successful formula.

So, they’ve resorted to the lowest common denominator: releasing shitloads of FFVII spin-offs, since they’re sure to make easy money.

For those who are unable to play it, there’s a game script for Before Crisis that seems to cover the game’s storyline. It’s not done yet, but it’s being updated as the player progresses through the game.

For now, you can just read a review of BC from someone who played the game at the Tokyo Game Show 2004:

I think its cool and I love the “Cloud Phone”
But this part of game play is just brilliant:

Simply take a picture with the camera, and the game’s onboard image-recognition software will distill the image down to its basic color and create a like-colored materia. Predominantly white pictures make white healing materia, while yellow and red pictures are good for lightning and fire magic, respectively.

This is a big step in video game evolution – interaction between a real world and the game. What happens in the “wild nature” affecting the make-belief universe on the screen…
So Square Enix is milking the cow dry with all those FFVII spin-offs, but trying different platforms and different game styles should be considered as a positive development for video game industry.
Now, I feel like moving to Japan. Konnichiwa. Arigato.

Seriously? Sounds kind of like those Bar Code Battler things they had a while back.

OK the Current FF Projects and what I think when they are coming out.

AC: Once realised in Japan, Would take a month or two get an English Ver if not straight away.

BC: Highly improbable for the US or the UK to get.

DoC: Chances for a World wide realese, Game at earliest '06 in Japan.

FF12: (or as I call “Tactics Advanced on to Playstation 2”) '05 Japan 05/06US 06UK

Big Nutter
All dates are not Square-Enixes but Nutter’s Asumtions for the amount of Information. I will say that offically ALL FF Projects are “Out As Soon after they are Done”

I don’t get it

Big Nutter—> Your assessment of release dates for FFVII spin-offs is pretty accurate, plus or minus 3 months.

Now, this is probably the most useless piece of info you’ll ever get – a walkthrough for a game that you’ll never play.
But you can you use it as a learning tool on how to write walkthroughs. It’s still a work in progress, so check it out once in a while – could be as much fun as studying mating behavior of snails

Note: by You, i mean whoever reads this. Over a 100 views so far…

Maybe Before Crisis will make it to the states someday after all.

Toward the bottom, Akitoshi Kawazu hinted that Square-Enix may port some mobile phone games to the Nintendo DS. This is just speculation at this point, but his comments do make you wonder if they’ve got something up their sleeve…

Hiryuu thanks a lot for the link.
That DS looks like a real powerful little “machina”. I should have payed more attention to Nintendo hardware. If Square Enix decides to port “Before Crisis” on DS, I am putting DS on my Christmas wish list. But I still want the “Cloud Phone” just to boost my self-esteem. With FOMA P900iV in my hand I would look much better than this guy:

The famous “Cloud Phone”, Panasonic FOMA P900iV is one of the new models capable of running Square’s Before Crisis Final Fantasy VII mobile game, will be shown in Advent Children
Remember PHS?

…the eerie Japanese genius for marketing tie-ins

You should be putting the DS on your Christmas wish list anyway, since FF3 is being remade on it. And FF3 is one of the best video games of all time (just behind FF4 and FF6 and on par with FF5 and FF7 in terms of quality, if you ask me)… it’s about time it got a proper re-release.

AMEN!

FF3 was the best of the Nintendo FFs and as Hiryuu said, is just behind FF4 and 6. If you’ve never played it it introduced the job system that was seen in 5. And you can pick a dwarf as your job for cripes sake! Lali-ho! Its about time its being localized (hopefully).

You can watch trailers (about 1 minute each) of Before Crisis and Dirge of Cerberus here:
http://stokesy220.5u.com/main.html

The only new thing I saw was Cait Sith on the DC trailer. Please don’t tell me of all the VII characters they choose HIM to be Vinny’s partner.

The Cat is there for sure:

Two New Dirge of Cerberus Scans Reveal Cait Sith. We have our hands on 2 new scans, one of which reveals yet another optional character from Final Fantasy VII (Cait Sith) reappearing in Dirge of Cerberus. Another scan shows a possible enemy for Vincent.

And Another One!
Three has become four as Square Enix have announced yet another title to join the “Compilation of Final Fantasy VII”. The latest title is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and will feature on the PSP. Little has been revealed about what we can expect in this game, however Square Enix have described it as an action RPG. Still, we have a long time to wait - the game is due for release in Japan in early 2006.

At first, i thought it was a joke.
