Video game characters...

…never get tired. Think of it: they can run forever, jump inanely from platform to platform, get in firefights and sword battles for hours on end without needing to catch their breath.

Wouldn’t it be nice if real life were like that? Especially if you have little babies to take care of?

Then again, we don’t really know what happens in between levels. Could be they catch the infamous 3-second RPG sleep and wake up instantly refreshed.

Hey Cid, have you seen the KID RADD webcomic? It’s precisely about what happens when video game characters try to live a normal life. (Well, it was at start, later it turned into surprisingly well-written action saga, but it never forgot its funny VG roots.) Plus, the fact that the strip LOOKS like it was made using ripped-off game sprites but actually was ENTIRELY drawn by the author, increases my respect for it. I recommend it to y’all. The story’s over now (after two years) so it’s not like you have to follow it daily anymore, you can read the whole thing in one (long) sitting. Though I kinda miss reading it every morning…

And that’ s just the beginning…

That’s not completely true, Musashi gets tired in Brave Fencer although he still never eats and I’m sure there’s at least one or two games out there besides for Diablo and The Sims that have a stamina bar. Some games try to make it look like they do these things in a relatively short time span (Like how all Vagrant Story happens in the exact same day) so that a skilled and trained character could go trough the adventure with no exhaustion problems.

But I get your point. Then again, how do you program stamina, hunger and the like onto characters that supposedly work together? Think FFIX, Amarant is a mercenary and Zidane is a thief, but wouldn’t they get held back all the time by Vivi or Eiko?

EDIT: As for the life thing… well, I suppose they make the characters lifeless for convenience purposes. Then again, some games even work around this one: Mistral from the .hack games was a housewife and had a baby if I’m not wrong.

Yeah, Mistral was a pregnant house wife. Apparently Cid’s never played San Andreas :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m not saying that VG characters should get tired or hungry. I’m just commenting on the fact that they don’t. :sunglasses:

It’s most easily seen with MGS3 since they add in the “Medic” system or whatever.

Snake gets shot. Snake gets his bones broken. Sometimes, Snake ever has arrow stuck in his leg.

No big deal, just enter the menu and fix him up and he’ll act like nothing happened. He can handle getting shot, but go for a few hours without feeding him anything and he’s done for.

I remember in Morrowind though, they had that fatigue meter. Too bad I could never get into the game.

Video game characters (females in particular) are also immune to the effects of cold weather.

What about going to the can? Highlight of everyone’s day for sure.

They probobly do that while that game is turned off.

You get tired in GTA3 (well, gasp for breath) and on. GTA:SA even makes you eat if you want to keep muscle mass.

And Cid, I’m sorry, but this thread reminds me of the millions (AND MILLIONS) of “WHY DOZNT RYO PEE” threads that populated the Shenmue GFAQs forum when that game came out. :stuck_out_tongue:

Sheesh, people are taking it off on a tangent. 8p I wasn’t talking about going to the bathroom or even about eating. I was just making a semi-ironic comment about how nice life would be if you, like a VG character, had unlimited energy. I wasn’t complaining about it, either.

I think we’ve been spoiled by it so far. More and more games are making characters run out of breath (Silent Hill and GTA come to mind), and there are other factors becoming necessary (MGS3 and GTA:SA making you eat regularly), so us “oldskool” gamers are very quickly going to have our favorite past time overcomplicated.

They can’t be completely immune or (immature/inappropriate comment warning) their nipples wouldn’t be sticking out so far all the time… -_-

Or have to visit the loo.

Wish I could fall asleep for 3 seconds and feel refreshed…would give me way more study time. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah … that way, I could spend all night schmoozing around online!

Man, Kid Radd is the most awesome thing i’ve seen in while, thanks.

Indeed, that would be nice. It sure would make my workouts easier.

NOTE: I hate the gym.
:booster: Booster hates it too.
