US Military Torture Music

Apparently the US military has a soundtrack used in military prisons to induce sleep deprivation, disorient detainees during interrogations, and “prolong capture shock.”

Fuck Your God - Decide
Die MF Die - Dope
Take Your Best Shot - Dope
White America - Eminem
The Barney Theme Song
Bodies - Drowning Pool
The Meow Mix commercial song
Enter Sandman - Metallica
The Sesame Street theme song
Cold - Matchbox 20
Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen
Stayin Alive - Beegees
Raspberry Parade - Prince

First, this is creepy. Second, whoever made this soundtrack did a lousy job. Only half of those songs could be considered torture.

Even the BBC is reporting on it.

"In training, they forced me to listen to the Barney “I Love You” song for 45 minutes.

Holy crap, that’s inhuman.

Holy crap, that’s inhuman.

I’m sure they loved it…

What? You’re kidding. I’m pretty sure this is, like, a joke I read in Doonesbury once…

Talk about truth being stranger than fiction. And more dumb-assed too.

I could have sworn I heard about this YEARS ago - and, looking at the date of the article, it HAS been years. about five of them, apparently. No idea if they even continue to do this… if they did it at all. If they did, my only guess is they were trying for the most repetitive music they could think of. Personally, I would have gone with some Atonal Trance music.

I love you, you love me
We’re a happy family
With a great big hug
and a kiss from me to you
won’t you say you love me too!

I remember some of these being mentioned in…was it farenheit 9/11 or bowling for columbine? hum.

They forgot “Do You Believe” by Cher.

I found that more recent article from a few days ago and one from a few days before that. It’s based off leaked information.

Here’s a report from '05.

And here’s Wikipedia’s current take on it and some history of music torture.

Well it’s nice to know that if our gov ever goes completely fascist and locks me up for crimethink I can still listen to metal. :stuck_out_tongue:

Because nothing screams Suffer Terrorist Dogs more than the Boss screaming Born in the USA!

Having to listen to Barney and the BeeGees contravenes the Geneva Convention.

It’s inhuman.

Reading lyrics is not in the job description. I read somewhere that the Eminem songs aren’t exactly patriotic either. And Deicide’s “Fuck your God”, well, you know whom it’s about. Not to mention Rage against the machine, who are in one of them playlists.

If they want loud, disturbing music, they should go further from the mainstream. Try some pure noise such as the Boredoms, or maybe some early industrial (Throbbing Gristle, anyone?). If they’re just going for loud and vaguely scary sounding, they could get off with Anaal Nathrakh, but really, most of those songs aren’t that horrible.

Except the Barney song. Man, that’s irritating.

White America is, while not directly targetting the government itself, not exactly very flattering to the people. It’s basically him saying “You racist fuckers just treat me better than other rappers because I’m white”.

Thanks for the info.

Agreed. That list is pretty poor in terms of “scary”. Even that Deicide song is sub-par, in comparison to their earlier material at least. Get some fuckin’ “Dead By Dawn” in there!!

Personally I think they used those songs because they’re all linked to large record companies. I don’t think the underground bands would want their music to be used by the US military for torture music anyways. Or by the US military for anything, ESPECIALLY Throbbing Gristle. They’d probably vomit and play Kenny G covers if their music was used for torture by the US government.

This list probably isn’t meant to be scary to a typical North American person anyways. They probably think that a foriegner would be frightened by the “american rock music” and its “capitlist powers”.

Phhffft. Just listening to Enter Sandman? That’s not torture. Making them play it on expert drums on RockBand over and over? That’d be torture.

I’d bet there’s a very real difference between being in your warm bed with the Black Album in the background to lull you to sleep (as a welcome change from Berserker or somesuch band) and having an asshole blasting that shit for a month preventing you from sleeping.
