Unlimited SaGa: Mo' like Unimpressive SaGa?

http://gamespy.com/reviews/june03/usagaps2/

From what I’ve seen of U:SaGa, most of that is sadly right on the money. And these people gave Empire Earth GotY last year, so it’s not like they’re hard to please.

Anyway, is anyone else getting bad reactions to U:SaGa? Is the game really that worthless? Is this, perhaps, the end of the SaGa series?

:noway: Most people aren’t going to like SaGa because it is different and it’s something new with in the rpg rehashes I can’t really comment because I haven’t played and I’m tad bit biased towards SaGa but everyone has a diiferent view give a try. I don’t trust reviews anymore.

“From what I’ve seen of U:SaGa, most of that is sadly right on the money.”

But you haven’t even played it. The thing about SaGa games is, they all get bad reviews, and they’re all completely different. This one has a sort of board game feel, so it’s obviously going to be menu-based with static graphics. You can’t really trust most reviews on them, because, most reviewers try to keep the general public in mind. When I review something, I give the lowdown, but it might not reflect what I actually think about the game. The old Konami PS2 RPG, Ephemeral Fantasia, has to be one of the most absurdly bad RPGs ever when going by consensus…however I think it’s awesome. No review can tell you how much you really will enjoy a game; don’t knock it until you’ve tried it, at the very least.

“And these people gave Empire Earth GotY last year, so it’s not like they’re hard to please.”

Empire Earth is a completely different genre of game. And I bet you that a lot of people like it. I know friends that have Empire Earth, and they love that shit. Bottom line, that’s just not a valid point in saying that U SaGa is a bad game. :stuck_out_tongue:

“Anyway, is anyone else getting bad reactions to U:SaGa? Is the game really that worthless? Is this, perhaps, the end of the SaGa series?”

I know that a few people are speaking out against it at the Final Fantasy Online boards. They’re the kinda people that have Japanese PS2s and buy imports, though. :stuck_out_tongue: I have to admit, a big SaGa fan there has spoke out against it. A lot of people are wishy-washy about the game. But, you just can’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

There is good propaganda about Unlimited SaGa out there, you know :stuck_out_tongue: Here’s an interview with the director of every SaGa game released, Akitoshi Kawazu.

Yeah, except I HAVE tried it. Bitch.

I have not gotten bad reactions from the game yet. I’m still waiting to even try it. Some of the features sound boring already while some sound good.

I’ve liked games that have gotten bashed before and I’ve liked games that have gotten praised. Which is why I’m trying the game myself as soon as I can. I can no longer buy games based on following reviews or going against them. I buy based on information instead.

I’m expecting the game to be a bit tedious and hard to get used to. And I expect to be bored of map movement. I do expect to like combos and the panel system. I also like the idea of having to live with choices I make since leveling up is limited.

If I can get used to the reel then I’ll be fine. Of course some things I may never get used to. And sadly the reel may be one of them.

X, I’m sorry, but I do not think you had tried it when you originally made this thread. Maybe you’ve tried it now…but on the day you wrote that (June 16th), it wasn’t even released yet. I do believe you’d probly tried it now though. So, now that you HAVE tried it, what do you think of it, X?

Heh, Ajora. I usually buy games off instinct; if I can FEEL that a game is gonna be good, I buy it. I’ve never been wrong yet. But, reccomendations, I know to be weary of. I hate Star Ocean 2, though I was told by a whole lot of people that it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m probably going to give it a try. I’m not exactly a SaGa fanatic, but I truly enjoyed the Game Boy SaGa series.

Plus, who the hell listens to game magazine reviews? What do the critics know?

SG: Ever hear of imports?

Ever heard of “Games are more fun when they’re in a language you can understand”? :stuck_out_tongue: You know, that’s WHY people wait for localizations to come out? :stuck_out_tongue: I only import games when I know they’re NEVER coming out in English, like Rockman Battle & Chase :smiley:

BTW, you still didn’t tell me what you didn’t like about the game. Like I said, the way you spoke in your orignal post led me to believe that you’re just going off reviews, but appearantly you’ve played the game. So, talk to me about it. What did you think?

Actually, the person who imported it knows some japanese (it’s a long story) so he helped clarify some stuff.

As for not liking the game, well, again, those reviews kinda say everything I COULD say about the game. I dunno if any one piece kinda ruind it for me; it more of a “sum of the parts makes for a dissapointing whole thing”.

I see. Well, it’s aight. Just like any and every SaGa game, they’re pretty much all hit-or-miss; you’re either gonna love it or hate it. Some of them aren’t for everyone. I have yet to play one that I didn’t particularly like, except FFL3, but that’s because there was practically NOTHING original about its gameplay.

The only thing that might save its (FFL3’s) mediocrity is that the japanese spell system was similar to that of Final Fantasy (Not Legends) 1, where there are spell ‘levels’ based on their usefulness, and only a few you could actually have equipped at a time, as well as limited uses. I haven’t checked this out for myself, but that would make more sense, since the main characters and such were said to be adept in certain elements (according to the manual). I figure this would be true of weapons too, because EVERYONE can equip like, EVERYTHING. It’s retarded.

I liked FFL3 ;.;

It’s pretty nice, but not in comparison to the other SaGas…nothing really original about the gameplay.

Well, I guess maybe that was part of the charm to it; it deviated from FF JUST enough to make it interesting but not make you wonder what Square was smoking.

Incidentally, I played the three GB FFLs before ever touching FF5 or any other “real” FF for that matter.

Well, the GB FF’s weren’t even part of the FF series- they were part of the SaGa series. In Japan they all were called SaGa’s. They just changed the name to FF here so it’d sell better (like what they did with Seiken Densetsu- changing it to Final Fantasy Adventure)

I know that, hence the quotation marks around “real”. I didn’t know it then, but I sure as hell have for the past two years. God, why does everyone assume otherwise…I hate the SaGa series ;.;

…OK, maybe not. But still, it’s annoying.

Incidentally, the same place I got FFL1-3 I also got FFA. But it wasn’t called FFA; it was the European Version, called Mystic Quest. So I wonder what they called FFMQ over in Europe, if it ever went there.

FFL3 was kinda like a mix of SaGa and Final Fantasy though. Just try the JP version, like I said. :stuck_out_tongue:

And 'sides, that’s just kinda what I like about the SaGa series. Kawazu doesn’t fret to try something different…something COMPLETELY different. For this reason, I like all of them. Sure there’s things I like and dislike about pretty much all of them (I didn’t dislike anything about SaGa Frontier though :P), they’re a very refreshing change of pace in my eyes.

<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/staff/tenchimaru/td.gif”> They both got called Mystic Quest. If I recall correctly, the box art was also almost the same. It’s only been about a decade though, so there’s a chance I’m wrong :stuck_out_tongue:

Considering my collection plans of other things, I’d either have to find a a you know what or find an FAQ on the differences between the Japanese and U.S versions. MAybe it would be a good topic for this board. Tired, can’t start it myself right now…
