Ok, so I know of 1 indirect way of transfering some files from my pc to my brand new shiny laptop (god this thing owns) but I was wondering if there was a way I could just link both with a wire or something along the lines of and just do file transfers that way without going through any intermediates? Thanks (AGAIN) guys.
You could network them and then you’d have a direct link if you’re in the same group.
How do I do that. Note that Sin’s affinity for computer knowledge has gone down the toilet over the years so he’s not as savvy as he used to be in this category.
Crosscable.
It’s a specific type of wire that allows you to link two PCs directly, it looks just like your regular cable but the way the wires are placed in the RJ jacks is different. Ask at a store for one, they sell them premade usually as to make one yourself is easy but you need the specific tool (clamper) to close the jack.
Networking actually involves spending money to buy a network adapter and card and some installation of hard- and soft-ware, but if it’s wireless, you can carry your laptop around and be able to use your nifty Internet you already have installed. Plus you share files and printers and such.
If you don’t want to do that, I dunno. But if you ever get like 3+ computers, networking is usually good.
EDIT: I should’ve realized that God (Dark Sand) would have the answer before I could post this when I saw him viewing the thread.
We think XP has an Help File about that. Just read, Print off if Need be.
But Nutter has No Idea about 2k.
Big Nutter (& his OS girls)
ME, I’m not to sure my self that ME has one.
You might want to look into “ghosting”. I’m not sure how it works but it pretty much makes a copy of your hard drive and thansfers it to another coputer.
Bahamut: Sin isn’t looking in making his laptop a mirror of his desktop. In fact, you do NOT want to make your laptop a mirror of your desktop, because a laptop is not a desktop!!! There’s battery power measuring programs, you usually use different standby settings, etc.
I’m actually helping Sin setup a small network between the two so that he can easily swap back and forth at home.
That would fail. As the ghost data includes configuration files and system data that are unique to your setting, so unless the machine you send the ghost data is an identical clone in every respect (which usually, it’s not) then you’re shootin yourself in the foot.
Provided you have an ethernet card for both computers, you can buy a crossover cable and network the two computers directly together. When you get the crossover cable, hook both computers directly up to each other. Then you just have to go into “My Network Places” and run the Home Networking Wizard. It’ll set everything up for you.
Or you can listen to Xelo who will probably give you steps involving the installation of Linux, praising him as lord god of all computer related stuff, and sucking his wang.
If it is a wireless LAN, you could always ADHOC it?
adhoc?
Why do you insist on always giving tech support when you don’t know what you’re talking about? I don’t mean this as an attack at you, but really, one day someone might do what you say and fuck up their computer(s). Please don’t post stuff like that unless you actually know how something works.
Again, nothing personal, but it’s just too easy to fuck someone up that way. What if I randomly told people that didn’t know better that deltree was a way to unpartition your HD? We’ve banned people in the chat over that, but it can just as easily be done without malicious intent simply because people give out advice they don’t understand.
About how big are these files? If they’re not huge you could always just upload them into your staff folder briefly, or even DCC it to someone to send back to you.
The cross cable is definitely the cheapest and fastest way to transfer files between two computers. Even if you get a wireless network working without using a base station like Devillion is suggesting, you’re still going to have to buy a wireless card for your desktop since in all likelihood you don’t have one right now. In addition to this, not all laptops have wireless network cards (I made sure mine doesn’t have one), so you might actually have to buy a wireless modem card for your laptop, which again will be an extra cost.
If you buy a pre made cross cable, then all you do is plug one end into each PC’s network card, and assuming you have XP it should automatically detect the other PC and you should be able to send your files (make sure to give the other PC write access on the other computer).
If you need any help with the finer details just ask and I’ll be glad to give you a hand. Keep in mind that this solution assumes that you don’t have a switch, hud, or router (i.e. you don’t already have multiple computer sharing an internet connection).
Some advice to other people who reply to these tech support threads, keep in mind that usually when people post asking for help it’s because they don’t know how to approached the problem. Giving them suggestions or advice that is beyond their ability to apply is useless. Try to remember that if someone asks for information about how to move files from one PC to another then they probably don’t have the knowledge to set up a network by themselves (or they would have come up with this solution themselves) and suggesting that they set up an adhoc network is an absurd idea.
It’s like telling someone who asks you if he should buy a bicycle to go to class and you tell him “No, buy a unicycle.” I’m sure that your solution will work equally well, but it’ll be much harder to do.
It’s really strange, I don’t recall reading this thread until this morning, much less giving advice earlier…
Both computers have wireless access and I connect at home through a router. I can temporarily steal an ethernet cable upstairs, but thats’ a temporary solution so I would really like to know how to connect my computers through a wireless network; Zero told me that I need to have one of the 2 computers physically connected to my router. Is there really no way for me to do it if both are wireless?
CH: that was my indirect idea.
Ok so as a temporary fix until I have the wireless connection set up, I stole an ethernet cable from another computer in my house. I connected my laptop and my pc. What now? (God I feel retarded)
Well, you could always come into chat at some ungodly hour and talk to me, Im always avaliable to help you set such things up! Hell, I can even tell you how to configure your shares so they are hidden and Im more than happy to try to work out why you funky subnet masks work!
Failing that (ICE CUBES!) you could just out two tins cans connected by string next to the computers and let them TELL each other about the info!
PS. I dont know what im doing, please dont flame me TD!
thanks everyone for your input! Shalcar managed to fix it, it took a couple hours x_X;
one thing you could do for the future is put everything into a “my network places” type folder then all ya hafta know is the name of the computer you wanna enter and then you do is like \(insert computername) and it should take you right to its network places folder and from there just copy paste. and the slashes might be the other way its been awhile since ive hadta do it…
