Thanks. I actually did three of them. One for MM, one for Minish Cap, and one for LttP (and fyi LttP is by far the hardest of the three). And I’m even thinking about doing another one for OoT too.
I’ve also done a swordless + deathless run on the second quest of the original game.
Hm, I finished Minish Cap by talking to everyone and getting everything I could, so that’s the last game I’d try a minimalist run on. I may give ALTTP a try. You don’t have to get the bottles there, do you?
Well, I got ALTTP with me, so I’ll give it a try if I’m not distracted by other games (and life*). One of the hardest parts will be switching off the part of my memory that makes me go where there’s stuff to be gathered. I’ll keep you updated.
Actually it’ll be better to keep in mind what you’ll need if you’re going for a minimalist run.
I managed to get through with only 15 (16 if you count arrows separately) items (including upgrades), the 5 A items, and 4 pieces of equipment (the Fighter’s Sword, the Master Sword, the Green Tunic, and the Blue Shield (at least until I could get rid of it)).
Otherwise good luck with that (you’re going to need it).
I kinda began a min run. Er, which means I took a few minutes to beat the first dungeon and then got sucked into Dragon Quest. But I’ll probably go through with it even out of curiosity to see what it feels like playing w/o the boomerang (fave item).
Well I don’t know about how you are doing, but this discussion got me to make a minimalist run on my recently acquired copy of Link’s Awakening DX.
For what it’s worth though that doesn’t change a hell of a lot from a normal playthrough. Really, the only things I didn’t get were the L2-Sword, the Boomerang, the Mirror Shield, Mambo’s Mambo, the 12 pieces of heart, and every Trading Quest Item after the Pineapple. This is essentially the easiest game to minimalist in the series.
Also they changed the ending slightly. Now you see Marin’s face in the sky which fades away to reveal a seagull which flies off into the distance and then the screen fades to black with a message thanking you for playing instead of the screen going black and Marin’s flying by with wings and the only extra message being the words The End. Oh well.
Well, the 'rang is among the least useful in the series and you don’t get the Sword/Shield till late in the game and Mambo’s Mambo is just a teleporter. I don’t remember how difficult was LA, though I don’t remember health being too much of an issue.
We are hit by the Hurricane “General Inspection” these days, so I haven’t done anything with ALTTP. Probably next week.
To clarify the Boomerang in LA is the most powerful weapon in the game (going so far as to be able to one shot the final boss’s final form). It’s also a great source of Fairies since it can dispatch those Lil’ Spark enemies which are otherwise invincible. In fact the Bow is essentially useless since the Gohma mid-bosses can be brought down with the Hookshot, the Armos Knight in the South Face Shrine can be defeated with the Spin Attack, and the only puzzle that requires(?) the Bow gives a key (except that there is a locked door in that dungeon that you can get to either side of without unlocking it which means you can ignore the door and not solve the one Bow required puzzle of the game), and of course the afore mentioned final boss fight.
The L-2 Sword is very nice to have (and can be gotten as early as after Level 4). The L-2 Shield only helps against those Beamos enemies but it’s required to get to the western side of the mountains. Mambo’s Mambo is indeed a teleporter song that warps you to either the start of the dungeon or Mambo’s Pond. I also didn’t get either of the new tunics from the Color Dungeon (but they didn’t even exist in the original version to begin with so there you go). I also also didn’t get the capacity expansions for the Powder, the Bombs, and the Bow.
As for health it’s much like LttP where you are forced to pick up the boss’s Heart Container else you must rebattle the boss again and again until you pick up the Heart. I had to end the game with 11 of the 14 Heart Containers and unlike in LttP almost everything will only deal at most one heart’s worth of damage (except for those enemies in the Dream Shrine and Under the Mermaid’s Statue who can deal three full hearts worth of damage in one hit, but fortunately those are the only places you’ll find them in).
