There's been a lot of these in the past few months, but...

I’m having computer trouble. 8P

I’m having trouble receiving and sending files with certain programs. I’m unable to direct connect or receive files through AIM or IRC, and I’ve logged into various FTP servers to grab some files, only to have an error come up about my IP after I’ve connected; the error doesn’t allow the filelist or directory to show up for some reason.

Does anyone have any ideas? I know Dark Sand is an expert on this kind of stuff. Thanks in advance, everybody. 8)

It’s a long shot, but are you on some sort of school network? Because they sometimes block that kinda stuff to eliminate file sharing.

I’m at home, but you’re right, that’s a common problem. If it helps, I’m using Windows XP.

Well the two most likely sources for your problem would be a badly configured router or Win XP service pack 2.

I don’t suppose you have either one of the two?

I know I dont’ have the second, because I haven’t bothered to download it. I guess it’s the first one, then. 8)

windows xp may have something to do with it, also. another possibility is that your computer may be infected with spyware. spyware is an advanced form of computer terrorism which usually goes undetectable by norton antivirus or firewall, slows down your computer to molasses and can be contracted by viewing certain sites, downloading files, or simply having a constant internet connection(like me, i have direct satelite uplink) you can get rid of spyware…but most of the programs are costly. i recommend downloading ad-aware(it’s a free spyware removal tool) and at least running a scan on your computer. i had problems with spyware a while ago. it resulted in every time i tried to view a site, i would get redirected to a porno site or files wouldn’t download, or something else fucked up more than windows xp already is

Oh, I ran AdAware earlier today. Thanks for the advice though. 8)

Anyways, thanks for the help, everyone. It may very well be the router. Luckily, the guy who set it up lives right down the hall, so I’ll ask him about it. 8)
