the value of money in games

is something makes should take in consideration. They should hire people with decent economic skills. For example, in Zelda, ther are more rupees than there are pesos in mexico. Legend of Legaia has a problem where the prices are more inflated than in some European countries.

I dunno, considering the setting/story of Windwaker, the sheer amount of cash makes sense, plus you need roughly 4000 rupee for story purposes alone, not counting the subplots and items you can buy.

Welcome to the world of fantasy Sin.

I really don’t see the problem. Except for one game: Shadowrun for the SNES. IT’s hard to buy much in the beginning. I wanted the Shotgun too…

That and for the Genesis, but money is SLIGHTLY easier to come by.

Uhm… WHOA.

And I thought MM was a bit psychotic. btu then that was due to constant time travel. (which begs the question: How the hell did Link stay awake for three days? Multiple times even?)

<img src=“http://www.rpgclassics.com/staff/tenchimaru/td.gif”> One would wonder why one would sell one’s possesions when he can just grab some coins from the grass?

Z : that’s not hard. I made 1000 bucks right now in less than an hour.

The Value of Everquest Money

It seems the value of EQ money is slightly more than the Yen.

I hate you Sin.

And the fact that they actually went to the trouble of putting a value to Everquest money is kinda disturbing. Even moreso when you consider it’s more valuable than some major currencies. Although the way it’s traded is EVEN MORE disturbing.

In Diablo2, you can’t buy crap with money, no matter the amount of it. Its always Item for Item trades, and even, most items aren’t worth much.

In RO, the money actually worth something. Yeah, that right. It might take a lot of it, but you can buy items and equipment with it.

I can’t remember how the money structure was in Legend of Legaia, but in Legaia: Duel Saga everything’s really fucking expensive, but the enemies drop a ton of money per fight, and you can get a couple hundred thousand in a dungeon. Also, the high cost of weapons and armor is sort of a prod for you to combine your stuff to upgrade for 10k instead of 100k, if you have the right materials.
Edit: Damn smiley

That’s because in D2, there is not a lot you can do with money. In D2, everything you buy is crap, except for potions. So instead, people will barter. That’s done to some extent in EQ, but because EQ isn’t hacked and because the market isn’t flooded with cash, it isn’t a problem. D2’s not that balanced. Its not directed towards maintaining an economy and stuff.

I really dont’ think D2 was meant to have an economy, at that. D2 isn’t exactly an MMORPG. Not like Everquest.

I don’t think it would be a major thing to consider.

I’m surprised the discussion didn’t get to SIM games yet.

I’ll add Habbo Hotel to this. Most users have never seen the color of money (there was some Hobba anniversary when they gave 5 creds to everyone, but that doesn’t count). Only a few people have creds and furni. I think less than 10% of its users possess all the wealth that there is in it.

Quest for Glory tried to do the money thing differently. First off, enemies didn’t drop stuff every time you killed them. In fact, in the first two games, only a handful of creatures dropped cash, while you could take parts of the other monsters and sell those for stuff. Second, it actually has weight. You can’t carry around nine million silvers without being bogged down. And finally, you had to use it. A lot. As in, every time you dropped by the town.

Meh, you’d think that Gil would be worth nothing in the FF series. After all you kill a wimpie monster with a stick and it gives you like…500 gil.

Ori, this is also a game where it costs up to 100z for a shirt.

Buy 5 shirts with what a level 1 monster drops? Psh.

i agree with Book, RO money has a nice value.

Hnn. I’m broke. Excuse me while I go outside and kill a couple of animals and cut the grass. Most game creators have experienced being broke, this is just a desperate attempt to bring they economic fantasy worlds into reality.
