The most depressing ironic headline ever... ;_;

AUSTIN (AP) - The reigning Miss Deaf Texas died Monday afternoon after being struck by a train, officials said.

Tara Rose McAvoy, 18, was walking near railroad tracks when she was struck by a Union Pacific train, authorities said. A witness told Austin television station KTBC the train sounded its horn right up until the accident occurred.

McAvoy, who had been deaf since birth, won the state title in June and represented the state ``with dignity and pride,’’ state pageant director Laura Loeb-Hill told The Associated Press via e-mail Monday night.

McAvoy was to represent Texas at the Miss Deaf America pageant this summer, Loeb-Hill said.

McAvoy graduated last year from the Texas School for the Deaf, attended Austin Community College and then started at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., in January, but had returned to Texas, Loeb-Hill said.[/quote]

That’s incredibly ironic, and also very depressing. Thus, I don’t know to be amused or upset. I think I’m neutral.

I feel bad, but I giggled a bit =
It sucks, but life goes on

lol…awww man was my reaction. Just a giggle, then a feeling of dread.

Who the fuck goes for a walk on railroad tracks?!

Someone that Darwin correctly predicted wouldn’t live long enough to mate =P

This just in. Miss Blind Iowa falls down open elevator shaft.

Worked pretty well for the kids in “stand by me”

facepalm Not…smart. >_>

1 hit combo

I’m so glad I’m not the only one in the middle over that…

I second that. Why the hell would you walk around active railroad tracks when you’re fucking deaf?!

I admittedly laughed a bit. It wasn’t a giggle, it was much more than that. Although admittedly, I felt bad. A little.

We are not amused. Just not sad, either.

I’m more apathetic than you!

A deaf person walking on railroad tracks (or “near,” as the story puts it) is killed by a train. Okay.

Even considering the mental faculties ascribed to the average beauty pageant contestant, am I the only one who reads this and thinks “suicide?”? From the point of view of a deaf person, you could walk out on the tracks with your back to the train and while you may feel the vibration in the ground, you likely couldn’t anticipate the exact second you’d die. That might make it a more attractive suicide plan for her.

In any other case you’d have to provide an explanation for why she didn’t see the train coming, as it seems natural that she’d check. Maybe there was a blind corner, maybe she was under the influence…

Anyway, I doubt AP will follow up on this story enough for us to know. Foiled again.

In a way, I would have to agree with Kraken. I think we underestimate the intelligence of a deaf woman.
She’s not retarded, okay? She is just like you and I, and would you or I ever in our lives decide to go run on the train tracks? For your sake I hope not! She knows damn well what the hell train tracks are, and it’s not like she’s never seen a train before. A friggin monkey, or any animal for that matter, would know not to take a step onto the train tracks. ESPECIALLY since she’s DEAF and she knows it, she wouldn’t run the risk of taking a little jog on the train tracks with her back turned to the rail traffic, knowing that she won’t be able to hear the train coming. And here we are thinking that some poor deaf woman decided to take a little stroll on the train tracks for FUN? Come on, no one is that stupid. There’s something else to this in my opinion, and it might have been suicide. Who knows?

Secondly, I would like to state that my apartment is about 50 feet away from the train tracks, maybe less. Every time a train comes by, we can hear the vibrations caused by the train. If we can hear the vibrations from 50 feet away, you bet your ass you can feel the vibrations too. And the vibrations can be heard for about 10 seconds before the train comes, which is ample time to haul ass out of there.

All I’m saying is that this could not have been her own stupid mistake.

Trump card in this thread has been played. Kraken ftw.

Someone who is very, very depressed and wants to end it all in a quick and relatively painless way?

It reeks suicide, yes.

Yep. I also think suicide when reading this.

Is it bad that I busted out laughing when I read this? Cause I don’t feel bad.

No one gives a shit when non-deaf people get hit by trains. Why should I care about this deaf chick?

No, not at all. We’ve always laughed and been amused at others’ misery. It would be nothing new.

They normally don’t, that is true, but they would have had it been Miss Texas. It has nothing to with the fact that she was deaf, she was Miss Deaf Texas. She was famous.
