The Meaning of Life?

Okay I have to write an essay, with the title of “What is the meaning of life?” And I sort of thought it would be a good idea to see what you guys think of this subject.

So tell me, what do you think the meaning of life is?

To live and struggle to survive, and die happily knowing that you have accomplished something in life… uh… yea.

Mate, feed, kill, repeat.

(I can’t believe I’m quoting them…)

42?

Loki, that was sad :stuck_out_tongue:

The Meaning of life?

Damn funny movie.

Ugh didn’t get the movie or think it was funny in the least. Anyhows maybe its to find that missing sock? To be energy for the machines? Perhaps its a joke question?

Does life need a meaning? How long is this essay supposed to be? Answers always seem to be very, very short.

Life is pain…anyone who says differently is selling something.

Damn, GG Crono beat me to it…

But honestly, the meaning of life is going to vary from person to person. Some people look at it from the biological perspective (Loki), just seeing what our most base instincts are. Others look at it from a more historical (?) point of view, about what happens to most people (Fenril_Knight). Mixed in with with the historical point of view is also where people want to do something worth remembering, thusly gaining immortality through memory.

Hmmm… I second Jing’s question: how long is this essay supposed to be? ^_^;

(Though if you can work in Hitchhiker’s in any way shape or form you’ll be my hero forever!

No, life isn’t all pain, what about love and joy? What about those moments where time stops and you feel completely at peace? I know for a fact I’m not the only one to have experienced those.

My meaning of life is to help people. Doesn’t matter if you help them in a big way or a small way, as long as you help them. Self-sacrifice for other people is one of the most pure and good acts there is and is definately worth doing every chance you get. That’s why I always try to help other people, even if it means I miss out or get hurt.

You’re not on this earth very long but the best thing you can do is to touch other people’s lives by helping them if they’re trapped or in trouble, or even helping an old lady across the street or stopping a mugging. Just one kind act towards somebody can brighten up their day, restore their faith in humanity and make them believe again that there are good people in the world. In some cases it can even help them to realise that life is worth living. I look around today and I see hardly any good souls left that make other people’s problems their business.

Of course, helping other people like this is very draining and can place untold pain on you but when it does, it’s all the more deep and meaningful. Knowing someone that’s been raped or molested or something similar is a very painful thing to do for you both but when you help that person, you’ll know that you’ve really touched their lives and they’ll always like you and be thankful.

Yes I know it sounds really stupid and unrealistic to some of you but hey, it’s how I live my life. I’m happy, I have self-worth and I know that helping people is the greatest gift I have.

AHEM THE MEANING OF LIFE IS TO EMBRACE THE WAY OF THE SHAOLIN STYLE OF KUNG FU THAT WILL ENABLE YOU TO DESTROY YOUR ENEMIES IN A SERIES OF DECISIVE BLOWS THAT WILL BREAK EVERY BONE IN HIS BODY! IT IS VITAL TO PROTECT YOUR LOVED ONES WHEN IT MATTERS MOST AND ALSO TO BECOME A WARRIOR OF THE SPIRIT OF KUNG FU!

IF YOU EVER WANT TO DEFEAT YOUR ENEMIES YOU MUST FIRST DEFEAT YOURSELF! TO DO THIS YOU MUST FOLLOW THE PATH OF THE LOTUS, THE PATH OF GOOD AND RIGHTEOUSNESS!

To die.

A philosophy major at Harvard with a 4.0 got that question as her final philosophy exam. Her answer:

“Why?”

She was the only student to get a 100%.

Reeeeally?: http://www.snopes.com/college/exam/oneword.asp

And the answer is rutabegas you fools, everyone knows that.

A website’s mention of an urban legend, vaguely resembling my story, is no proof that it didn’t happen. For one, there’s significance in answering, “Why?” to the question of the meaning of life - unlike, say, “Because,” or, “What chair?” Second, I’m more inclined to trust the person who told me about this than an urban legends web site.

In the words of Rufus the naked mole rat:
Cheese.

You’ll notice that Snopes doesn’t actually say whether it’s true or not. But my freshman science teacher said that she had an actual friend who answered “Why?” with “Because” (whereas she herself wrote a three page essay on the meaning of existence and also got an A).

THIS IS NONSENSE! THE QUESTION WAS NOT “WHY?” IT WAS “WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE?” THE ANSWER TO WHICH I HAVE ALREADY EXPLAINED.

THE ONLY WAY TO ACHIEVE SALVATION IS THROUGH THE MARTIAL ARTS! ALLOW ME TO DEMONSTRATE:

OH LOOK! IT IS MY ARCH ENEMY YAR KRAMER, AND HE IS STEALING MY WIFE TO RAVAGE WITH HIS BAND OF THUGS! THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS! PREPARE TO FEEL THE BITING PAIN OF THE FLYING ELEPHANT STYLE OF KUNG FU!

KYAAAAAAAAAAA! YOU ARE NO MATCH FOR ME YAR KRAMER! I SHALL NOW TAKE MY WIFE BACK TO MY TEMPLE, WHERE I WILL BED HER, BECAUSE LOVE IS AN IMPORTANT PART ON THE PATH OF THE LOTUS! HIYA!

Well, if I were you dude, I’d go with the Shao-lin kung-fu for your essay. Really get into it, too. It’ll be the most fun to write, and if you’re paying attention, I bet you’ll learn a lot in the process, and if moments like that aren’t what life is all about, I don’t know what is.

Write it in really big font like that, too. With crazy pictures. :stuck_out_tongue:
