So what can you guys tell me about the Horn of Africa? It is almost certain that I’ll be going there in January/February for some deployment. I’d skip going to Iraq since I would leave before any deployment there (such as the one I volunteered for). Anyway, what can you guys tell me about the area?
between somalia and ethiopia, id say it looks like you have a party on your hands.
Don’t forget Sudan and the Darfur region. I believe they’re counted as part of the Horn.
I was looking at the Marine Corps webpage and it seems like I’ll be joining to Djibouti (it’s a small country just north of Somalia). Do you guys know about the region? Any tensions that I haven’t heard about? This is good, keep it coming.
If you’re going to be stationed in the Horn, be prepared to be moved into Sudan, particularly Darfur, if the UN decides to declare the crisis there to be genocide.
Put simply, that whole region is a fucking mess dude

Sounds like they’re deploying you in the region around Sudan to act as a part of a Peacekeeping Mission. They’ll probably have you escort and assist refugees and the like.
Well, like a few people already said, the area’s in virtual anarchy. There isn’t much else to it.
And if you die you probably won’t even get news coverage. So save that for later.

If you’re going to the horn, you’re going to darfur. And if you’re going to darfur, i’d be scared out of my fucking mind dude.
Why do you say that?
Because Darfur’s the big “potential” genocide mess going on Sudan with the Janjaweed and whatnot. Any sort of UN resolution authorizing military action, and you can bet your marine ass is gonna be involved with that in some capacity. Think a Mogadishu type environemt.
My Guard Infantry unit had to do security over at the Sinai. I’ve heard that ain’t so bad. I’d take that over Iraq any day.
You’re going to be going up against their militia, and they are hell bent on genocide. I am sure you’ll be ok though. At least its not iraq 
Yeah, I was thinking that area would be like Mogadishu since it is fairly close. I see now, and that does make sense. The thing that I would like about fighting in Africa against genocide is that when I got back I could talk to civilians and not have them look down on me like many do of those coming back from Iraq (it’s sad really).
So when do you leave?
