I hope Cid doesn’t kill me posting this before him but here we go:
DeJap has there preliminary patch out for Star Ocean. I haven’t personally tried it yet but I’ve been reading good things about it. I’m going to wait for the final one though. It may be a while but I’m sure it will be worth it.
It’s hardly worth waiting for the final version, although I probably will too, since I don’t really have time to play SO now anyway.

Hiryuu’s right. The final version won’t have all that much that this version doesn’t have… mostly extras like lengthened item descriptions and a VWF 8x8 font. The current patch is a very professional job. 
Just remember to use save GAMES, not save states. Just in case you decide to switch over to the finished patch mid-game. 
I’ve started on it and thus far, it seems to be really well done. I don’t find any problems at all with it to be honest, although I haven’t really gotten that far into it yet.
