Songs with awesome bass?

I need to practice. Throw some good tunes at me with bass that doesn’t suck :stuck_out_tongue:
I don’t care what style.
(Links to songs are more than welcome)

Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt 1

Have fun you fuck.

Anything early in Metallica; Cliff Burton was the shit. Motorhead is great, too. Every fucking song.

A bassist I respect, despite anything, is Simong Gallop of the Cure, who writes such fucking great basslines, even if they aren’t incredibly hard.

That’s funny, because I was going to say “Fascination Street.” :stuck_out_tongue:

Faith No More stuff? e.g.

We care a lot about transformers cause there’s more than meets the eye

We care a lot about the little things, the bigger things we top
We care a lot about you people yeah you bet we care a lot

Hades: That is beautiful. I’ll have to learn it just to give you the finger :stuck_out_tongue:

Much appreciated guys.

“Dani California” - Red Hot Chili Peppers
There are some parts with really awesome bass.

Anything by Yes. Their bassist is a monster.

Iron Maiden also have some very intricate and well written bass lines. Steve Harris is amazing. Man, I figured that would have been first for you to look at!

I don’t really associate Iron Maiden with bass. But maybe that’s because their entire rhythm section is a disaster imo. It would need way more crunch and volume if they wanted to hit me as hard as a band like Kamelot does, intricate or not. They’d be good to learn from though.

And yes, Cliff Burton was the shit, but I’d stay away from Justice For All if you want bass lines you can actually hear. He was probably the only strong part of the band pre-black. Hetfield was awful and Kirk was too technical and unmusical. I’d stay away from Cliff’s songs only because they’re hard for me to listen to, but if you can stomach it, he’d be really good practice. I say learn Fade To Black and move on.

And yeah… get some Kamelot and jam to them.

Been working on (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth actually. Awesome bass solo. Gonna learn a little motorhead after that, probably some chili peppers, and then I’m gonna tackle what hades showed me.

Anymore are still welcome

I played bass in a band for a while - the song we would always play to warm me up was the last song on Jurassic 5’s album “Quality Control” called Swingset. It’s a mash up by Cut Chemist, but there is some crazy bass in there. You can easily play with it and just improvise around as well. The song is in the key of G by the way, in case that helps!

Bassnectar

I like earlier Metallica pretty well. I don’t think the guitar is particularly unmusical or technical.

I never liked Kamelot. Too poppy.

Bassnectar is fucking great, though.

What do you mean by poppy? Mainstream? Because their sound is about as far from pop as you can get without sounding like your only goal in life is to spite pop.

Bassnectar is pretty good and unique from what I’m hearing on youtube… But really, you can’t say you hate one band because they’re poppy and then say you like Bassnectar. They don’t play their own instruments, they sound like a rap loop, and they sample the Beatles. I don’t even know why I’m using the word “they,” it’s probably one guy with a couple of turntables.

I don’t GET you. You must be just saying things to piss people off, because your posts all reek of hypocrisy.

I’ll admit that technical was the wrong word for Metallica though. Technical is what they were trying to be. Fast and sloppy is what they were. Listen to Kill Em All and tell me I’m wrong. Then I’ll know you’re full of shit.

I wasn’t saying poppy as in mainstream pop music, per say, I was more stating my disfavour for the type of metal that Evanescence and, in my opinion, Kamelot play. It feels derivative, distilled, and trite to me; incredibly formulaic songs that fail to offer much beyond the formula. I just don’t think there’s anything new or interesting in their sound or what they have to say. This distinction should clarify my opinion of Bassnectar.

As for Metallica, they play thrash metal. This is a combination of metal and hardcore punk. (Note the latter.) What the hell is their first album going to be but fast and sloppy? A lot of the music it created, sloppy or not, was pretty cool. I like listening to it.

Kamelot is nothing like Evanescence. They’re closer to Blind Guardian or Symphony X

I used an accessible example, but I would still say they’re far from “nothing like” one another. That said, I’d agree Kamelot is closer to Blind Guardian’s new stuff, which also falls into that realm. blah blah I like different things than you that is not the point of this thread blah blah

All of your posts are belong to me

Yes, Burton was the shit. However, Jason Newsted actually played bass on …And Justice For All, not Cliff Burton(which in itself explains why you don’t hear the bass as prominently). Though Burton wrote some of the bass lines prior to his death.

Fade to Black was on Ride The Lightning, BTW. You may have been thinking of One.

Oh yeah, if you want some good bass, and I can’t believe they haven’t been mentioned. Listen to Rush. Geddy Lee’s vocals may not be for everyone, but his bass playing is amazing.

One Minute Silence(a political rap-metal band) also has really good bass.

DEFINITELY! Rush are killer. Their musicianship is through the roof.
You could check out just about any progressive band and find some damn find competence in musicianship.
