This specific client is open source. I’m yet to see an open source program with spyware in it, as someone would just remove the spyware and rerelease it. And in any case, there’s a whole lot more clients out there: Just search on Sourceforge.
I download so few things I handle nicely with IRC and FTP. So don’t listen to me, because I haven’t used it myself. People say BitTorrent is nice though.
DC++ is good if you don’t mnd sharing your files too, it’s kindof like IRC but everyone is pretty much required to have an F-serv.
