So...any Bronies all up in here?

Hah who watches the show I read the MANGA

Brony reporting in.
Of course, the “wtf, it’s my little pony” stage wasn’t very big for me. I even used to play with early generation MLPs when I was little. (My sister had some of them and when none of my friends were available…)
I’ve also never had much self-respect when it comes to entertainment. If I’m having fun, I don’t care what the rest of the world thinks about my choice of entertaining activity.

I’m definitely judging both of you but not in the way you probably think. I don’t think that you’re lame because you’re into some kiddy girly cartoon, I enjoy at least one shonen (can’t think of any comics aimed at younger audiences I really enjoy though…) that I can think of, and I only said girly because that’s how most of you sexists like to go around labeling things. It’s just that you obviously have poor taste, go read something like Berserk or Zetman or Walking Dead, or actually don’t because you probably won’t appreciate the greatness of them and that’s a waste of the art.

edit: (These are just a few examples of the manga/comics that exceed the artistic limits of their platform (I can’t think of the right word to use here but you probably know what I mean) and, really, have become something else entirely. I might be a little biased (I’m definitely extremely biased), but I can’t think of a single “show” (or anime, whatever) that accomplishes this.

2ndedit: Just one last thought. All of the “hype” around this show on the internet has obviously done nothing but created a bandwagon, inflating its “popularity.” Not only do the vast majority of the so called “fans” probably not even watch the show, bandwagons and all the sheep who try to hitch a ride on one disgust me.

Sorry if I seem a little hostile, but after spending some time in the loony bin (only a day btw I’m not so crazy) my probation officer told me I need to be as honest and blunt as I can be for nothing more than practice sharing my feelings and getting things out in general. Even though I’m usually wrong about things it has become important to get my thoughts out for the sake of my success in probation!

What I’m trying to say is that this show SUCKS and the people who like it SUCK NEGLIGIBLY LESS.

After “This would totally work as an SRW game” Nanoha, I’ve learned to never judge a book by it’s cover (especially once it hits it’s logical conclusion in stuff like Madoka Magica).

That said, :eek:THE BRONIES ARE EVERYWHERE!!!

.

Actually, yeah. It’s a pretty cool show. I was totally ready to hate it when my friend tried to explain to me that it was good; but, I was pleasantly surprised.

Friendship in the Nanoha sense, amirite?

(I still need to resume watching StrikerS …)

At this point, the only reason I haven’t watched MLP is that I don’t have the patience/attention-span to just sit down for half an hour and watch something. :3c

Actually, no. Friendship in the actual friendship sense! One of the fandom’s catchphrases is “We’re gonna love and tolerate the shit out of you.” And they mean it! This is easily the nicest fandom I’ve ever been a part of.

I think the reboot is good (and ages better than the original), but not amazing. Underpromise and overdeliver.

PS If there was a Thundercats reboot with similarly good colouring, animation and characters that aren’t mutilated (as far as one can do anything with Thundercats, ya know), the internet would probably explode. Attention to detail is always nice.

PS2 Apropos that Ponycraft video, I hope they don’t bowdlerise Kerrigan in Heart of the Swarm too. Managing to mess up Raynor after 6 arcs was amazing by itself.

I’m just trying to accomplish the consideration of what should be my duty in this forum. Please don’t drink out of the beautiful cup if you want everlasting life, much like that one Raider Jones movie, the goal is to drink out of the cup which you would least expect has the power to grant you the ability to be able to have life everlasting.

From your tone and your examples it does sound as if, despite you claiming otherwise, you are just judging us because you think MLP is a girly show.
Your examples of “real art” are all of the same dark variety. And, please, don’t throw baseless accusations around. I used to read and enjoy Berserk until it stopped updating, and then I couldn’t be bothered to pick it up again when it started again. So yes, I know quite well what Berserk is, what is has accomplished, and what it didn’t do quite as well. While I haven’t read the other two I’ve seen some of the art. They also seem to be “so dark and gritty and mature that there is No Fun Allowed”. I mean, correct me if I’m wrong, but that is my first impression.
Which all gives me the impression that your opinion of “real art” is not a scale of artistic merit but just a measure of how grimdark something is: “Bright colors and friendship and rainbows aren’t art. You have to have ‘mature’ subject and gore and such to have real art.”

I agree that there are probably a lot of people who are on the pony bandwagon just because it’s popular but I believe that the majority of the fanbase are “real” fans who love the show because it’s beautifully animated, has good humor and well thought out characters instead of bland stereotypes like many other shows.

But the thing I’m wondering the most when reading your post is:
Have you tried giving the show a chance and watching a few episodes (you know, actually building a informed opinion) or are you just on the anti-pony bandwagon of “it’s popular, therefore it must suck” even though you hate all bandwagoning so much?
Believe it or not, but some thing are popular because a large number of people actually think that it’s good even if you, personally, might not agree.

Don’t worry about Ramza, he’s just tweeking out. That said, neither My Little Pony nor Beserk are “art”, at least to me. Just pure entertainment.

Yeah, I read about a press conference they did and their ideas about the characters seemed focused on being ‘edgy’. I don’t remember specifics though.

Yeah, I know. I just can’t help myself when such an obvious chance to argue about - well, anything, really, shows up. :stuck_out_tongue:
I wouldn’t say either of them are art in the “hang it in a gallery” sense, but neither can I deny that they are more than “just a manga/cartoon”. They both have a lot of artistic merit in their own way even if neither is likely to hang on a wall in a gallery. You just can’t compare a cartoon to, say, the Mona Lisa. It’s like judging apples on the criteria of bananas.

.

I agree that it’s comparing apples to golf balls (of course you can compare apples to oranges, they’re both sour and are fruit!!!). Cartoons and comics do have their own artistic qualities but generally in a different sense. I think the main difference is comics and cartoons are sequential art, whereas the Mona Lisa is a stand alone piece that needs nothing else to support other than a good dusting once in a while and maybe some pretty lighting. Both are valid forms of expression, however when it comes to “art” I’m tempted to lean towards the painting rather than the cartoon. Like I said, one is for entertainment, the other is for awe.
