Since you guys are lame and emotionally sappy...

I had a random thought but I dont have the rescources to answer it myself. So I wanted to ask: Is it actually possible to use ether in combat? Afterall, isnt is just R-O-R? And how did gamemakers come up with using ether in combat to begin with? Did they experiment or something…

I thought about it when I just finished Xenosaga on when Jr. keeps saying “Ether drive!” and was just curious. Since I know the’re plenty of games using some sort of ether in their combat skills.

Ether (generally ether refers to CH3CH2OCH2CH3) is an anesthetic. I suppose that counts for something…

I think it’s a strange English-Japanese-English Again translation of the concept of Ethereal, rather than the actual chemical Ether, which is, as Cless said, an anaestehtic. So, I guess you could make yourself hurt less, but it wouldn’t heal you or anything. It can have psychoactive effects, which is it’s tie to the word Ethereal, and would explain an illusion or maybe mana regeneration, as it opens your mind to new pathways (maaaaaaaaaaan).
Really, though, I believe the effect of Ethereal was cited, not actual ether, since there are many Mystical, Celestial, or other such attacks, and those are similar concepts.

gimme a bottle of ether and an american flag and i’ll show you how to have a good time.

Also I have changed the title of the thread to match our current attitudes

I can’t argue. Why, Pretty in Pink on television and I almost cried.

Umm, sure i guess…as long as I get an answer.

I see. I guess I was looking at it in a skeptic form of view then. Although Ether (gamewise) is usually used an attack base, I get what you mean. But exactly, ether is an anaestethic, which is why I was a bit confused ^^'.

Steve…yeah you do that.

Ether is a real word and refers to things other than the chemical compound:

1398, from L. æther “the upper pure, bright air,” from Gk. aither “upper air,” from aithein “to burn, shine,” from I.E. base *aidh- “to burn” (cf. Skt. inddhe “burst into flames,” O.Ir. aed “fire,” L. aedes, see edify). In ancient cosmology, the element that filled all space beyond the sphere of the moon, constituting the substance of the stars and planets. Conceived of as a purer form of fire or air, or as a fifth element. From 17c.-19c., it was the scientific word for an assumed “frame of reference” for forces in the universe, perhaps without material properties. The concept was shaken by the Michelson-Morley experiment (1887) and discarded after the Theory of Relativity won acceptance, but before it went it gave rise to the colloquial use of ether for “the radio” (1899). The name also was bestowed 1757 on a volatile chemical compound for its lightness and lack of color (its anesthetic properties weren’t fully established until 1842).

Ether is just plain ordinary water…with LSD.

Thanks Cidolfas, that explains alot. So Im assuming that its impossible to collect ether since there isnt any substantial physical component in it at all, sort of like some spiritual energy I guess.

Reminds me of some thread here about the possibility of a saber sword…

One again Steve: Awesomeness. How it actually pertains to this thread, I dont know…but by god Ill find out.

One day I’ll be more drugged up than hunter s thompson

Viiiiiiva las vegas?

An actor portraying a man using ether in a movie based on a novel totally pertains to a thread questioning the use of the word ether in RPGs.

Is that a Japanese person Raughing Out Roud?

heh.

edit: how’s that for emotionally sappy? Fine wine and hugs turn robber into party guest | World news | The Guardian

It’s just as possible as it is to cast lightning spells. This is an RPG.

Gdo of THNUDER! DO DO DO!

I was wondering why the thread’s title and the author’s name mismatched.

Steve, that was a great film:

“We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, laughers, screamers… Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into locked a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we’d get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.”

The amazing thing, IIRC, is that they managed to exhaust all that stuff.
