Robert Downey Jr. to play Sherlock Holmes

I really don’t get why people are so focussed on this “not being Sherlock Holmes.” For one thing, it really doesn’t seem all that far removed from the existing canon of work. In reference to the objections against the action-based tone, it should be noted Holmes practiced a style of martial arts based around stick fighting in the stories; he mentions it saving his life several times. I would imagine he does his fair share of deduction, as well, however, that is harder to show in a trailer without spoilers, and less interesting out of context.

He’s a pop icon. One of, if not THE first pop icon. People wore black armbands when Conan Doyle decided to kill him off. So people tend to get up in arms when they’re changed in any way whatsoever.

I hear he wears a fedora instead of a deerstalker! OUTRAGE I SAY!

I don’t recall him definitively wearing a deerstalker in the original works. Maybe one when he’s in the country, but Sherlock Holmes would never wear a deerstalker in London.
