With some the modern twists that’re supposed to go into the character, I think it’s a good fit.

He can’t possibly be as good as Jeremy Brett.
No one could possibly be as good as Jeremy Brett. It’s just not done.
It looks pretty good and pretty funny. Jude Law is an interesting Watson.
They’re reimagining him as more of an action detective. The dynamic between Watson and Holmes is now like one you would have for a barely tolerable co-worker instead of a work friendship. I find that to be the most interesting redevlopment.
I saw the Sherlock Holmes trailer when I went to see Harry Potter and I was speechless. This isn’t Sherlock Holmes :P.
This isn’t what Doyle had in mind at all :<
O.o
Kinda looks like it’ll be a ‘Wild West’ version of Sherlock Holmes.
I miss the Granada series. I wish they’d start showing it on A&E or PBS again. ;-;
I agree with Sin. I still think it looks pretty fun, though. I might just see it cos I think Robert Downey Jr. is an excellent actor.
Fixed and Seconded.
At least I have some of the A&E episodes on DVD.
Hollywood hasn’t “reimagined” enough characters in literature. I want to see the one where Pip gets a machine gun!
I have a crush on Robery Downey Jr. anyway…
Nevermind that. Hollywood hasn’t “reimagined” enough TV programs from the 50’s and 60’s. Where’s my goddamn F-Troop Hollywood!?
This looks awful. It looks like they turned Sherlock Holmes into Indiana Jones, or The Adventures of Han Solo or something. I’m completely turned off.
…At least it’s not Will Ferrell playing Dr. Watson. Soon as I read that, I was like “…that’s a sick joke.” And then is aw that’s for a different, more “comical” reimagining of Sherlock Holmes. At which point I wanted to scream.
Basically you’re all bitching about what? That Robert Downey Jr is going to portray your precious Sherlock Holmes? Why cuz the trailer didn’t just have him wearing his deerstalker cap, with a pipe and magnifying glass following some blantant footprints? Bah, I’m unhappy cuz they didn’t choose an unknown actor to play the character. Why couldn’t they have picked someone that looks just like the pictures we always see? Even though, guess what, those drawing are just how the artist imagined he looked. omg, you mean that isn’t how he really looked, not that he ever existed, he’s a magical book man that lives in literature. I’m gonna bitch cuz I’m such a huge fan of classic literature, even though I’ve never read any of it and if I did it was for school. I don’t ever want to see them make a classic book into a mordern day movie cuz… .cuz… cuzz… they’ll just crush my view of it! waaahhhh. Why don’t they just have sherlock holmes get caught with a hooker and a breifcase full of blow and then bust out some mech armor and fly away with his jet feet. I never want to see an actor/actress ever play a role in a movie ever again. If they ever make a freakin christmas carol movie… they had better get the real Ebenezer Scrooge to play himself! cuz I don’t ever want to see Proffessor Charles Xavier play him! or worse, see Gandalf the grey play Richard the third. holy shit… wait… they did not get Jesus to play Edmond Dantes and H.G. wells to play Fernand Mondego. hey wait a minute. Did they get Jack Bauer, Robin from Batman, Major League and some other guy to play the three musketeers? that sounds pretty dope. But yeah, that’s a sick joke, how dare they get an awesome actor to play an awesome role. I’m a big baby and I wont be happy until they genetically engineer a real sherlock holmes to play himself. If they don’t use computers to simulate what he would look like and talk like from the data we put in our computation machines. I won’t be happy.
Seriously, what is the problem here? I am probably the biggest fan of Sherlock Holmes at RPGClassics. And I’m just happy they’re finally doing something with the character. He’s a great character and has dozens of fascinating stories. Robert Downey Jr is perfect for the role. Do some research (cuz you obviously have this image of how he should look/act from cartoons and episodes of star trek and you don’t know better cuz you’ve not read the stories) and tell me he’s not pretty damn good to play the great Sherlock Holmes. My only problem with this trailer is Watson. Jude Law sucks balls on a daily basis. And Watson would never punch Sherlock in the face.
anyway, back to my incessant ranting. Johnny Depp looks like shit as the Mad Hatter, why does Tim Burton have to make all his crappy movies specifically for Hot Topic? hi, i’m a brooding middle schooler and I need to have a crazy looking johnny depp on my shirt so other kids will know that I’m into things like Nightmare Before Xmas and pirates of the carribean and other garbage that is made just for the purpose of selling soft drinks and you’re all a bunch of Joe Sixpacks. and man. I bet you all just jizzed in your pants when you saw that Alice trailer. I can’t believe how angry you guys have made me. it’s like listening to a bunch of people talk about a subject they don’t know crap about. this guy that is making the Sherlock Holmes listened to the stories his entire childhood and is being very true to it. but you guys just want to bitch about something.
I’m more interested in seeing how Jude Law as Watson is going to work, taking into account Jude Law’s image in most of his films.
Besides, how about Sacha Baron Cohen as Holmes? His concepts are generally promising, but the execution is debatable.
I admit, i don;t feel anything really towards Downey playng HOlmes, since I’m not familiar with his work besides Iron man. For all I know, he’ll do great. Will Ferrell, though, I know all too well.
I really don’t get why people are so focussed on this “not being Sherlock Holmes.” For one thing, it really doesn’t seem all that far removed from the existing canon of work. In reference to the objections against the action-based tone, it should be noted Holmes practiced a style of martial arts based around stick fighting in the stories; he mentions it saving his life several times. I would imagine he does his fair share of deduction, as well, however, that is harder to show in a trailer without spoilers, and less interesting out of context.
My problem was that I was convinced that I was watching a trailer for “Wild Wild West 2: The Quest for More 19th Century Booty” until it said Sherlock Holmes. In fact I would be all for a Sherlock Holmes movie if it didn’t have Holmes solving all his cases by the ‘Shoot first, shoot again, shoot some more, and then try to ask a question after everybody’s dead!’ method.
It’s like trying to make a Castlevania movie without the Vampire Killer Whip. Without that you’re pretty much just making Van Hellsing 2 (the analogy fails because Van Hellsing 1 was basically ‘Castlevania: the Motion Picture’ to begin with, but with no VK Whip and Hugh Jackman as the main character instead of Orlando Bloom).
Yes while I’m aware that Holmes practiced Martial Arts and was a proficient fighter, but if he has to take down some giant steampunk monstrosity using bond like gadgets and twin six shooters to keep it from destroying London then I would like for you to point when and where he ever did that before.
