That’s because the creator (and most everyone else in this thread) have some kind of superiority complex with regards to Southerners. If a Southerner acts in anyway that these people think is idiotic, that Southern is instantly a redneck and a hick. It especially doesn’t help when you have idiots like Izlude and RedComet basically making it sound like the South is some miserable hellhole and that everyone born there is some half-brained nitwit straight out of Deliverance. It’s no better than racial stereotyping, yet it’s not considered “politically incorrect” for some fucking stupid reason.

Don’t forget that incidents like this confirm suspicions about everyone in the south being a rednecked hick. “I knew it all along, this proves it!” Also does anyone know the name of the sort of activity 984 is describing? We see it a lot on these boards and I never know what to call it.

Although I think it extends beyond just “the south” and also to rural areas as well. I grow up in an area where most people around RPGC would consider a redneck area. My best friend describes HIMSELF as a redneck, and I associate and enjoy the company of so-called “hicks” rather often. And I don’t appreciate comments like from Sinistral (an ADMIN for God’s sake!) calling people from my community… my friends… “trash”. I know Sinistral well enough that he didn’t mean to offend me, but I also know him well enough that he often does use rather harsh language that can be offensive. And I’m not even going into the other, more boorish comments elsewhere in this thread.
ANYWAY, I remember a while back when 984, in a very serious manner, stated that he was offended by the use of “hick” to describe southerners, and he asked that people refrain from that derogatory term. And he’s doing it again. Can we, as a community, try to be more respectful toward things like that?

The only thing I’ll say to that is that it was ingrained so much into offline society that as much as people would like the total censorship of the word, it will not only take time, but offline sensibilisation as well.

Kentucky is considered a part of the South, yes. Barely, but yes. However, I used Southern in more referring to the Appalachians. However, Hiryuu does make some good points about hick being more for rural areas in general.

Well, there’s a difference when it’s done in a back and forth manner where each side knows it’s a joke. However, when it’s done in a manner such as this thread to show some kind of innate superiority to “hicks,” that’s when it gets offensive.
I didn’t insult metrosexual urbanites, I just said that rednecks were cooler than them. Although, I don’t really use hick or redneck as an insult (unlike most people here), more of just another class of people (as I said, I hang out with “rednecks” all the time), so I can see where the confusion comes from.
Besides, the first things that come to mind when I think of metrosexual urbanites are Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, and I’ll ALWAYS insult them. =P I don’t stereotype people just because they live in urban areas… in fact, I’m rather fond of urban areas, and there’s a good chance I’ll end up living in a more urban environment in a couple years.
When I think of metrosexual urbanite, I think of a sissy.
Please…everyone, and I mean EVERYONE looks down on someone, and it’s not a phenomena constrained to the US. Every country has some type of people that urbanites look down on as a backwards-y, uncivilized people, in fact, the word ‘civilian’ literally means ‘civilized’…as in, not a barbarian. (Or a non-Roman, as it meant originally…of course the Greeks thought that the Romans were barbaric, so go figure.)
So yeah, like it or not, everyone is biased in one way or another.
