Random TV Show comments

Actually, the guy voicing Batman in TB&TB is new: Diedrich Bader, who I think voiced a character in The Adventures Of Billy & Mandy. He’s doing a pretty good job, though. In general the show has some good voice acting, with some really surprising castings (Bat-Mite was voiced by PEE WEE HERMAN! O_O )

Yet More Random TV comments!:

  • They’re airing Gurren Lagann on the Sci-Fi channel!? If I’d known I would’ve watched it earlier. I only found out because I was bored on late Monday night and channel surfed around. So this is the Anime so many people are talking about? Yeah, I can see it is waaay over the top- but I like it, sometimes that’s fun too. Too bad I only caught like the two next-to-last episodes. I hope they rerun it, I’d like to see it fully. (Yeah, I know you can download pretty much anything online these days, but I actually prefer my Anime dubbed. Besides my PC tends to konk out during long downloads.) Oh, and they’re airing Rave Master too!? Whoa!

  • Speaking of Sci-Fi channel, I haven’t actually watched anything on it in years. I used to, until I realized how crappy nearly everything they aired was. Talk about low budget! Well, except things like BSG, I guess, but I could never get into that. Too “Evangelionish” for my taste.

Oh, and they are airing the new Doctor Who, I see… I haven’t watched Who since the Fourth Doctor, back in the 80’s, when it aired here in Spanish. Is it me, or is the new Doctor a dick? I don’t remember him being that much of a pain in the ass. But then, dying and being reborn in a new form does that to you.

  • Next week, America’s Got Talent returns. Look, no one is more surprised that I like this show that I’m, OK? It might have that annoying Simon guy and it starts with the same kind of they-must-be-paying-them-to-embarrass-themselves-in-public losers, but things ALWAYS pick up quickly, with some greatly talented people showing up, and some really moving moments by the end. Besides there’s nothing better on the air in that time slot right now.

If Wilf thinks the Tenth Doctor is a dick, he should have seen the Ninth.

Yeah, the Tenth Doctor is really quite nice.

And he’s always apologising.

Or the Sixth for that matter.

As for the SciFi channel I finally gave up the ghost when they started spamming wrestling (even if it is fictional as all getout). Although I did come back with their promise of Anime (and their timing couldn’t have been better thanks to AS turning themselves into an animated outhouse by that point). Anyways I’m still waiting for them to finish changing their name to SyFy already.

As for anime on SciFi/SyFy Rave Master? Seriously? Isn’t that like the bottom of the Shonen barrel? Otherwise I just hope they get around to showing Gundam 00 S2 sooner or later (preferably after they finish with this run of TTGL).

And as for SS granted the kid is very competent but both at saving the day as well as royally F***ing up. Most of the episodes are propagated by the kid wanting to get in on the action but failing miserably, the parents trying to save his sorry arse and failing miserably, and then the kid manages to buck up and save himself from whatever’s chasing him only to drop the MacGuffin while doing so, which the villain snatches out from mid air then laughs manically as he warps away to rub it in another day.

Why do I always get this shit? As if the determining factor in why I feel sorry for him is that his preference doesn’t match mine? Am I also not supposed to feel sorry for people who, say, don’t prefer not being suicidal?

Preferences are not always subjective. Conan does what Leno does better than Leno does it, and also does a much wider and deeper variety of comedy. Not preferring Conan isn’t really an issue of subjectivity. It’s a sign that someone thinks they’re above having shameless, immature fun. It’s a sign of arrogance and self-importance and everything else the world needs a lot less off.

Attributing everything negative I say to the fact that it’s different from me is in the same vein as thinking everything that’s longer than it is wide represents a big, juicy, chauvinistic cock. If you can’t see how retarded you’re being by insistently implying I’m a bigot, I feel sorry for you as well. And if you think I shouldn’t, I feel even more sorry. Pretending unconditional tolerance is something to be proud of is pathetic, destructive, and just plain wrong. But go on, keep living in your idealistic world where no one’s opinion can ever be wrong, even if it happens to be that the planet is 6000 years old and flat.

Or better, fuck off.

The difference between feeling sorry for someone who doesn’t like the same comedian you do and feeling sorry for a person who doesn’t want to live is that, in one case, it’s clear that the person actually gets less enjoyment out of life than you. Guess which case that is!

As it happens, I agree with you that the quality of acting/comedy/music/etc. is not always subjective. A certain amount of technical skill can usually be judged to be present, while impossible to quantify. So judgments about the quality of two different performers in the same field is reasonable.

To suggest preference isn’t always subjective is patently ridiculous, as that’s the definition of the word. So I think it is indeed reasonable to make judgments about people based on what they like, however they are tenuous and should be subject to a large degree of skepticism.

Also, difference between two opinions about the age of the earth is that one is supported by scientific testing, the other is utterly unfounded on anything except arrogance.

A one hour (well, maybe one hour with 5/10 minutes of overrun) block in a 168 hour week is not “spamming” wrestling. Even if you count the commercials, it is still hardly any time devoted to ECW.

I’ve been posting at RPGC for… I dunno, 6 and a half years. I’ve seen a lot of dumb shit: Sabin, Setz, Uriel, Fiero being a complete furfag, Xelo, DN and his lesbian D&D adventures, etc.

But this, is the single dumbest thing I’ve ever seen written. High-five.

amirite

No.

Wow Wil, you surprised me! I thought Saturn and I would be the only ones around here that would watch the Game Show Awards. I thought they were well thought out too. Though I’m not a huge fan of Deal or No Deal or Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? as they were though. I loved how Bob Barker kept saying he was “THE legend” because it is so true, even without GSN naming him so.

My favorite shows that are airing currently are Burn Notice and Castle. Anyone here watch either of those?

Are you talking about tenth doctor? Tenth doctor is really hot. Way better than old man sixties doctor.

Ninth doctor was good too.

If you watch the show, watching the episodes in order really helps the story archs to make sense. Theres a lot of small things that you have ‘aha!’ moments about episodes later.

Actually, I meant the Ninth Doctor. They’re rerunning his episodes on SF. I guess they don’t have the newer episodes yet. I need to catch up on a lot of Who stuff, obviously.

Anybody else thinks “Sy Fy” sounds dumb? What, they couldn’t register “Sci Fi” as a trademark?

Rave Master isn’t the worst Shonen anime ever (Bobo-bo was dumber) though it doesn’t stand out either. That’s why I was surprised to see it in Sci Fi, I though they only aired really “hot” Anime like Evangelion or Hellsing. Still, it is fun enough. I think I’ll watch it.

As for Secret Saturdays, I’m definitely going to have to sit down and review the series carefully before I pass judgment.

Wow Wil, you surprised me! I thought Saturn and I would be the only ones around here that would watch the Game Show Awards.
Glad to see I can still surprise you “kids”. Oh, and Barker was just making fun of the fact everyone is always saying he’s THE greatest Game Show host of all time. Though he probably is. :stuck_out_tongue:

Alright! goes in for the high-five

(Though in fairness you did forget about Kaiser and Quina.)

Fix’d! (kinda)

Also, I love how you guys caught the blatant lie about wrestling, but not the blatant lie about me taking the dirt nap because some crappy wrestling show?

As for the wrestling comment itself, it was made in retrospect to some show (can’t remember which) that I kinda enjoyed getting axed by that which was the final straw for me (plus Why in god’s sake does a channel about wrestling monsters of the week has to have a wrestling show in it’s lineup?). Also there was a local channel that did the same thing but to it’s Saturday Morning cartoon lineup (thankfully the rest of these Saturday cartoons quickly followed suit thus allowing me to not give a damn about when I woke up on Saturdays).

That’s right. I forgot about Bobobo (man did that one ever suck). Humorously enough they haven’t shown either EVA or Hellsing in this new lineup (and they probably wont either unless Manga Entertainment is holding the distribution rights).

SciFi airs ECW because it’s owned by the same corporation that owns USA (NBC Universal?). When WWE brought back the ECW brand, they needed a channel to air it on. Execs knew the show would draw, but it was also agreed to give it only a one hour slot. Really. 10 PM on a genre channel for one hour a week really isn’t all that bad. Sci Fi isn’t a ratings cow, and ECW has been its top rated program for like the past 40 weeks straight. The ratings it would have drawn on USA would have been lower than what’s currently on at that time, so put it on a station where it’s a ratings booster instead of a downer.

I’ve seen Hades post all kinds of stuff, but this is pretty funny. As if Hades didn’t know that he acted precisely that way for… I dunno, 5 years? You reap what you sow, and thats your reputation.

BTW Theres a new Stargate show coming out (which is the only show on SciFi that I watch besides Star Trek), and I’m excited. Stargate Atlantis sucked though, so im skeptical.

Gee, thanks for bringing all those memories back. I had almost completely blocked them out of my psyche.

And there is totally lesbian D&D porn out there, I’m sure. It’s the internets after all.

And yet more random TV comments!

Have you people noticed how Cable channels have “de-specialized?” It used to be that Cable was the big alternative to regular TV because they had all these channels for specific type of programs, so that, if you felt like watching, say, a science fiction show, you could easily find one at any time. But in recent years, many networks have become more and more generic. The Video Game channel now has, what, two game-related shows? The rest is crap like “Cops” which has nothing to do with video games (unless it’s an episode featuring stolen PS3s. :p) And what happened to all the videos on MTV? Or all the fun shows (aimed at old fans like me  ) on VH1? It’s all Reality Shows now- DUMB reality shows, like that “New York” b*tch, not the fun ones they used to have like the Surreal Life (now THAT was weird, like when they had ex-televangelist Tammy Fae and porn star Ron Jeremy in the same season! :hahaha;) And Charo, can’t forget Charo, man she’s still hot and she’s like what, 60? I’d totally do her! A-HEM Anyway, you know what I mean, even Sci Fi is featuring wrestling now. Sorry, but wrestling is NOT science fiction, unless you count those Mexican El Santo movies from the 70’s where he fought vampires and mad scientists and such. :stuck_out_tongue: The only channels that still are “pure” are the boring ones- the History channels, the Arts and Craft channels, the Porn Movie ones, etc. Even Cartoon Network has started airing live action movies! Some of them quite bad, too.

Anyway, this de-specialization, in combination with a general lack of shows that interest me (plus the fact the ones I DO like are often available for free online) is leading me to consider canceling my Cable service (but not the internet service!) when I move back to my old house in a month or two. I need to save money, anyway.

Well it looks like I’m not getting let off the hook for my previous boneheaded statement so it looks like I’m going to have to accept this one with quiet dignity and grace.

I do recall the tragedy surrounding both G4 and TechTV. Originally TechTV was a channel directed at computer geeks and tech heads featuring various programming covering the gamut from providing tech and internet suggestions to showing anime that Cartoon Network couldn’t show back then (stuff like Last Exile and either Crest or Banner of the Stars). However some video gaming nerds noticed how little TechTV covered their favorite medium and generally how much more sophisticated their past time was becoming and decided to make their own channel dedicated to videogaming. It was to be called G4 and all would be well. Or at least that’s what they hoped for. Unfortunately the corporate sponsors decided in their mad quest to quench their greed that they knew more about the medium and about the target audience then those so called nerds and committed a hostile takeover which resulted in G4 getting severely mutilated in the process. But it wasn’t enough. They had to have more and thus they turned their cannibalistic gaze towards TechTV. And in no time the last bastion for tech nerds was consumed and twisted to appeal to the MTV watching jocks thus the abomination known as G4TechTV was forged. Since then of course to further distance itself from those stupid nerds they’ve since dropped the TechTV part completely which is for the best considering how G4’s name is still getting dragged through the mud.

(I wouldn’t be so melodramatic about all of this, but it is one of the worst corporate demolitions of television programming that I’ve ever seen.)

As for the other channels they are little better. Many like the aforementioned MTVs 1 & 2, VH1, and the Weather Channel are little more than hollow shells of their former selves. And while some like Food Network, TCM, and the ESPN networks are fairly safe in their appealing to their niches most television is IMHO not really worth watching.

At this point I only really watch Comedy Central, Sci Fi, and TCM (and some The Weather Channel in some perverse hope of seeing something other than somebody’s house both flooded and demolished, idiots throwing themselves in the path of tornadoes, or ads) and even then its only on the rare occasion.
