Well it looks like I’m not getting let off the hook for my previous boneheaded statement so it looks like I’m going to have to accept this one with quiet dignity and grace.

Have you people noticed how Cable channels have “de-specialized?” It used to be that Cable was the big alternative to regular TV because they had all these channels for specific type of programs, so that, if you felt like watching, say, a science fiction show, you could easily find one at any time. But in recent years, many networks have become more and more generic. The Video Game channel now has, what, two game-related shows? The rest is crap like “Cops” which has nothing to do with video games (unless it’s an episode featuring stolen PS3s. :p) And what happened to all the videos on MTV? Or all the fun shows (aimed at old fans like me ) on VH1? It’s all Reality Shows now- DUMB reality shows, like that “New York” b*tch, not the fun ones they used to have like the Surreal Life (now THAT was weird, like when they had ex-televangelist Tammy Fae and porn star Ron Jeremy in the same season! ) And Charo, can’t forget Charo, man she’s still hot and she’s like what, 60? I’d totally do her! A-HEM Anyway, you know what I mean, even Sci Fi is featuring wrestling now. Sorry, but wrestling is NOT science fiction, unless you count those Mexican El Santo movies from the 70’s where he fought vampires and mad scientists and such. The only channels that still are “pure” are the boring ones- the History channels, the Arts and Craft channels, the Porn Movie ones, etc. Even Cartoon Network has started airing live action movies! Some of them quite bad, too.
Anyway, this de-specialization, in combination with a general lack of shows that interest me (plus the fact the ones I DO like are often available for free online) is leading me to consider canceling my Cable service (but not the internet service!) when I move back to my old house in a month or two. I need to save money, anyway.[/i]
I do recall the tragedy surrounding both G4 and TechTV. Originally TechTV was a channel directed at computer geeks and tech heads featuring various programming covering the gamut from providing tech and internet suggestions to showing anime that Cartoon Network couldn’t show back then (stuff like Last Exile and either Crest or Banner of the Stars). However some video gaming nerds noticed how little TechTV covered their favorite medium and generally how much more sophisticated their past time was becoming and decided to make their own channel dedicated to videogaming. It was to be called G4 and all would be well. Or at least that’s what they hoped for. Unfortunately the corporate sponsors decided in their mad quest to quench their greed that they knew more about the medium and about the target audience then those so called nerds and committed a hostile takeover which resulted in G4 getting severely mutilated in the process. But it wasn’t enough. They had to have more and thus they turned their cannibalistic gaze towards TechTV. And in no time the last bastion for tech nerds was consumed and twisted to appeal to the MTV watching jocks thus the abomination known as G4TechTV was forged. Since then of course to further distance itself from those stupid nerds they’ve since dropped the TechTV part completely which is for the best considering how G4’s name is still getting dragged through the mud.
(I wouldn’t be so melodramatic about all of this, but it is one of the worst corporate demolitions of television programming that I’ve ever seen.)
As for the other channels they are little better. Many like the aforementioned MTVs 1 & 2, VH1, and the Weather Channel are little more than hollow shells of their former selves. And while some like Food Network, TCM, and the ESPN networks are fairly safe in their appealing to their niches most television is IMHO not really worth watching.
At this point I only really watch Comedy Central, Sci Fi, and TCM (and some The Weather Channel in some perverse hope of seeing something other than somebody’s house both flooded and demolished, idiots throwing themselves in the path of tornadoes, or ads) and even then its only on the rare occasion.
