QuakeCon

So they got QuakeCon going on this weekend, and I decided since it’s fairly close, I’d go and take a look at what goodies and stuff they have on display. If you don’t know what QuakeCon is, then go look it up.

Anywho, they had at the Gaylord Texan hotel this year, which if you’ve never seen it, is a massive (and expensive!) hotel with an assload of stuff, including a fake Alamo backdrop. (Look up some pics of it.)

So after signing up for a badge and everything, we go inside and there’s just a ton of stuff on the floor. About half the space is dedicated to the BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) people who I guess are there for the Tournaments and other stuff. There were also some Arcade machines set up on Freeplay, though it consisted of mostly old-school stuff like Donkey Kong, Galaga, Pac-Man, and Space Invaders.

They also had some demo stations up for Quake Live Arcade (which I suck ass at), Doom II Arcade, WET, Wolfenstein, and Wheelman. Wolfenstein was pretty interesting to play, and Wheelman kinda played out like GTA with less violence. I jacked a truck cab and was nigh invincible despite the cops all over me, shooting out my tires, and sending SWAT trucks after me. Driving was kinda awkward though with the keyboard.

There was also an assortment of computer accessories, stations to play Quake Live, and the occasional giveaway. Also got some shirts and posters.

In the main hall, they were having a demonstration of Brink, which was pretty fucking cool. You just had to be there pretty much. One of the prettiest games I’ve seen in a while. (Edit: Here’s some info on it: http://kotaku.com/5337759/brink-impressions-it-all-makes-sense-now)

In all, I had pretty damn good time. Had to laugh when I was in the elevator and some kid with his dad was complaining about one of the tourneys and how it was for noobs and shit. It’s pretty funny to me when people take shooters seriously.

So anyone else ever been to one of the QuakeCons in the past?
