I tried to enter irchighway.net with mIRC this morning and I got a message saying “K-Lined for Open Proxy found on your host.”
From what I gather I need to “secure” my proxy, the problem is that I don’t even know what a secure or open proxy is and the Help page that came with the “Banned” message isn’t helpful at all.
The clearest thing that I got was: “You have a misconfigured SOCKS proxy on your host, SOCKS proxies are designed to allow many types of connections to be proxied, they are one of the most powerful types of proxies and one of the most common, as many internet sharing programs enable them to allow protocols other than HTTP. Securing this type of proxy generally means limiting the IP addresses that can connect to it to your own network.”
Please help me, being banned from irchighway is a really big fuck up for me.
No. It says that my proxy was veryfied to be insecure by a scanner program on 06/04/05 and I was still able to connect yesterday (I was downloading manga on #snoopycool).
Proxies act as intermediaries between hosts and are most often used to mask one’s true IP address, so their main application is in security. An open proxy is a proxy that anyone can use. A secured proxy is requires some form of authentication, usually a username/password scheme.
If you don’t really know anything about proxies, it’s unlikely you’re using one. Sometimes your ISP, firewall, or routers/switches/hubs will do odd things to mask your IP address which could be misinterprited as a proxy. I recommend making sure there havn’t been any changes made with any firewalls or routers you’re using. Or you could probably just find a secure proxy and use that, I guess.
Yes, I am behind a proxy and I think you gave me a good idea of what this might be, I’ve never had to input any authentication when using it. The problem is that I have no idea of how to secure it.
If you’re not running the proxy server [I don’t see why you would be using yourself as a proxy, but w/e o_O], then you can’t really make it secure. It’s pretty unnessisary to use them in most cases, so I’d recommend just not using them. Or just google for a secure one, it shouldn’t be too hard to find.
