I wasn’t a Genesis fan until I saw this video. Now they’re all I can listen to. If I had a time machine, the first thing I would do is go back to the early 70s to see them in concert.
And probably try to do Peter Gabriel.

MOSH!!!
I am at once more disturbed than I’ve ever been and slightly gratified. Well done.
Speaking of things which should have been mentioned in first posts that weren’t:
Joanna Newsom: My current favorite
Be warned, a lot of you will find her voice incredibly jarring (well, not so much on the first one) and annoying, at least at first. This is a phase. You will fall in love with it.
I know I did.
Tripod are <3 for the many laughs they provide me.
Ditto Flight of the Conchords.
Neutral Milk Hotel/Jeff Mangum are pretty nice to listen to I find.
Yoko Kanno is among my favorite people to just go and find random songs of.
And Gorillaz, in particular Every Planet We Reach Is Dead.
those are the ones that come to mind for now. As about the only band I really know much about is Red Hot Chilli Peppers and, as I picked that up from just random places, I won’t bother trying to formulate it into a coherent post.
Edit: And what the hell does dancing have to do with how good a song is? In fact, I’d say if you’re listening to it for that reason, you’re not really listening to the song but just to a beat. Which I guess explains all dance music.
Which gives me a bigger headache than anything else mentioned here. It’s one of the few genres I actually stay away from, there’s about two songs from it that I like.
The beat is the song! The lyrics are pointless, they should just start cutting them out of songs completely! And I dare you not to like this song! You can dance to it and it’s heeeeeeella goood.
That’s what good taste in music gets you. I’ll look into Joanna Newsom.
Music is not only for dancing. Music is about the catharsis that it brings to both the artist and the listeners, whether that be through dancing or lyrics that you can relate to or one of the many other reasons that people listen to music. To say that the only reason people listen to music is to dance is like saying that the only reason to watch films is to laugh.
I dunno, maybe he’s on to something… I did laugh at The Pianist afterall…
:ah-ha!:
I laugh at your pianist all the time.
So did anyone listen to the Genesis?
As I said, I only dislike most dance music. That song was fine to listen to, I guess.
But dear lord, to say the beat is the song is among the must ignorant statements I’ve ever seen or heard anyone say about it. Please tell me you’re just trolling and I’ve been had, so I can laugh and move on.
In general, I listen to music for the melody and the way the various instruments are played, which is why I stay away from a lot of metal, I find the playing to be mostly boring and lacking any real uniqueness, with a few notable exceptions. And I’m sure there’s lots I don’t know of, since I don’t listen to metal that much (or any radio or music station. Fuck listening to crap music just so I can hear a few good songs).
Apart from that, there are some songs where I just find the lyrics particularly moving.
So whether or not you listen to music for the beat alone, at least accept that that’s not all there is to songs, and not the only reason to write or listen to them.
Cavelcade: Good metal with awesome melodies and skilled playing wouldn’t be on your radio, which is why you’d be frustrated.
Yngwie’s arrogance aside, just check out the awesome skill that man displays.
And if you like melody, I’d check out some power metal bands (Blind Guardian, Helloween, Savatage, Gamma Ray, et cetera). Hell, even some NWOBHM (Iron Maiden, for instance) are very good with melody.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=KWKgItL1xvo&feature=related (Blind Guardian)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ksf6I10qKGU&feature=related (Savatage)
There’s another song by Blind Guardian that has a really awesome melody, but it’s more of a ballad than anything. Ah, well, I’ll show you anyway:
Silhouette: Yes, I did, and I liked it a lot. Sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude.
Oh, that wasn’t even about good metal GAP.
That was just about good music on the radio in general. I’ll listen to yours in a little while.
Who knew RPGers were such metalheads? O_o And I’m not even the least bit disappointed that nobody has yet mentioned country music. ROCK ON!!!
You wouldn’t think that people who play RPGs listen to music about dragons, war, UFOs, demons, and scantily clad women?
I recall promising something about the Clash and Reggae? I’ll get on that.
I love Genesis, by the way, Sil. I’d do Peter Gabriel as well.
But is not Oasis the greatest British band since the Beatles? Can we not vote on this?!
Blur are better. >.>
…yeah – i agree, people are basically getting sick of the same old rock/hip-hop/r&b bullsh*t… and there is just this big upsurge from a new style coming out of Europe – best place i’ve found it so far is a compilation series called ‘euro club hits’ on itunes – or check this link: http://www.rpgclassics.com/forumrules.shtml
