Pope Updates

As I type, CBC interrupted my curling (bastards) to tell us that the Pope died.

Everyone thinks he’s a good guy, you can’t put it aside: how many countries, how many millions of people around the world have been impoverished by that dogmatic line? It’s so bad in places that quite a few Catholic NGOs openly disobey the Vatican line on contraception because they acknowledge the horrible reality that opposing it helps bring about. Quite apart from that, this man condemns socialism and liberalism as sinful doctrines, and in addition to helping covering up numerous sexual scandals has also systematically centralized power in the hands of extreme sects like Opus Dei and excluded women and the laity from the government of the church. I’m not indifferent to his passing: I haven’t been this pleased at the demise of a world politician since Reagan died.

And never forget, it wasn’t until 1965 and Vatican II that the Papacy dispensed with the doctrine of Collective Guilt. This Pope’s entire tenure has been spent attempting to dismantle Vatican II. Draw your own conclusions.

How is the next one selected? Does god just pick or something?

It’s up to vote amongst the Cardinals.

The Cardinals get together, and vote on a new one. When they decide, little puffs of smoke come out of a chimney or something. I believe they have to wait 15 days before they vote.

I posted an article on that: They get together in a secret meeting and vote. The puffs of smoke are the burning of the ballets.

The pope has died, article: As of about 45 minutes ago.

The span between the Pope’s death and the voting is mostly dependant on the time it takes for the 120 Cardinals to get together. It’s likely going to happen in about a week.

I am not Catholic, but I hope that he rests in peace.

So everyone gets Monday off?

I think Catholics believe the chosen Pope is always in line with some greater plan of God’s. So, the choice is considered inspired of some sorts, probably.

I don’t believe so-unless you go to a private school. I think that it goes against the law that the no state is to supoprt one individual religion.

He lives in Argentina, a highly Catholic country. Is Roman Catholicism still the state religion there, Seraph?

Thanks, you really know how to brighten up a thread. I’m glad that you have shown us the truth, because we are, naive, feeble people.

That’s why I asked. My government declared a three-day mourning (It’s supposed to be one day but since it’s only going to show on Monday…) so I wanted to know how many are doing it.
