People who kick my ass.

http://www.thalidomide.org

EDIT: Nevermind, there’s an English version :stuck_out_tongue:

that goes for all drugs, not just thalidomide.

However, there’s something these people don’t understand about thalidomide: in the 50s, it was sold as a “racemic mixture”. Racemates are enantiomers of the same organic compound. An enantiomer of a compound is its mirror image, symmetrical, but unidentical (if you take the mirror image of something and flip it over back on top of the original picture, they don’t overlap).

1 racemate was the sedative, the other was an inactive compound causing birth defects. No one knew of the birth defect issue until problems arose.

Another example of racemization is seen in ibuprofen. It is sold as a racemate in stores. It takes an avg 38 minutes to act. In its pure form, it takes 12 minutes. Why do they sell the stuff like that? It works without causing problems and its cheaper to do it that way than to break apart the racemates.

The FDA strongly urges companies not to sell racemic compounds but it has yet to force em to.

So all in all thalidomide itself isn’t bad. It serves its purpose for menstruating women. However , you have to make sure they’re only taking 1 enantiomer of it or that you’re dealing with educated individuals, which I agree they shouldn’t handle drugs if they can’t understand how those drugs work. But that’s a problem that we face with a great many drugs.

Wait, so what IS Thaliomide and why’s it kicking your ass?

Thalidomide is midol in the 50s. It caused birth defects and taken out of production, until recently.

Silhouette wasn’t born in the 50s, and he doesn’t have birth defects…at least, that’s what he claims…unless…

Sil, is there something you’d like to tell us? insert ominous chord here

Is that the drug that caused stunted hands in babies? You know what I mean, ever once in awhile you see someone with a miniature hand, people call them ‘Midol babies’ I think, or ‘___ babies’ inserting whatever drug causes the defect.

Well the website shows a few babies in foreign countries with defects of the hand, a lot of them look smaller and crooked, so yeah, I would assume so. My parents were born around then, and I think they’ve mentioned Midol once or twice in that context.

Correction, it wasn’t a midol equiv, but it had a similar purpose, just in pregnancy (helps em deal with motion sickness and nausea and that kinda thing). Sorry bout that. And yeah, it did lead to the stunted growth (or rather lack of) limbs.

I think he’s talking about the people like the painter in England with no arms.

If I got my ass kicked by a guy with no arms, the last thing I would do would be post about it.

lol

Seriously, though, Astral was right. I did mean the people with no arms who can live a productive life and so on. I think everyone on this board takes their motherfucking arms for granted.

Best thing you ever said.

Was that an insult or a compliment? holds the President hostage just in case

I know of a person like that; although, he has grown a set of three fingers on each remainder of an arm: He is an expert at table tennis, despite his apparent handicap. Just to mention it: He usually beats me, and others, who have fully functional arms.

I consider that proof for that you can adapt to a handicap, and live just like everyone else.

Actually, if someone with no FEET would have kicked your ass, it’d be far more humiliating than someone with no arms. I mean, getting your ass kicked by an improbability…

I should be shot for even thinking about it. I know people with no feet exist, but they can’t kick your ass, they can hand you your ass…but not kick it.

I think he was speaking metephorical.
Is metaphorical even a word?

metaphorically, in the way you used it, but metaphorical is a word too.
