This may be a retarded question, but I only ever really wear jeans, and I want to… not do that anymore. Because honestly, they’re not very classy, they don’t breathe very well, and in spite of their durable reputation, mine always wear down in only a few months. On top of that, it’s getting pretty expensive these days to buy jeans that don’t look like shit. I’m talking, in the 100+ Canadian dollars range.
But, I also don’t want to look like some uptight dude. I want to avoid the “I’m 40” slacks-and-a-belt vibe.
What should I be looking for and where should I be looking for it? I want people to think, “hey, that guy’s got style, but he’s still pretty chill, and doesn’t look at all like a kid.”
umm dude. its not that hard. its called slacks man. your friends would probably think you were pretty baller if one day you just walked into school with colored slims. and cool shoes too.
Yeah, but where can I find a pair of slacks that doesn’t make me look old and uptight or goofy and emo, is the question
I just want a laid back, casual look. A little more casual than chinos, but a little less casual than the pic you posted, which looks way too skinny and saggy to me.
You know, I bet it’s one of those “it’s how you wear them” things, but I’m still asking.
You probably want cotton pants. Dockers, that sort of thing. You can get them in lighter colors and they can look casual and classy at the same time. And they’re a lot more comfortable than wool. You can usually get a decent pair for about $40-50 Canadian, I think. I don’t wear them often but I do at least own a pair.
I was gonna suggest getting a suit pants or soemthing, but you probably would think that’s stuffy. Go get some chords. They’re not jeans, they don’t look emo and they’re damn comfortable.
Unless I’m wearing pants that don’t require a belt, always wear a belt? Where would I be without you, The 984!
After skimming google a bit, I’m leaning toward Dockers. Dickies seem hit-or-miss, but if I could find one of the nicer styles I saw, I’d get them. Some of them had a lot of seams and zippers and shit, and they looked alright, but what I’m going for here are pants that are happy just being pants.
Dark Denim is classy for jeans only. It’s not as classy as anything that isn’t jeans, and like I said, $_$.
Oh sarcasm on the internet. Anyway, you mentioned “I want to avoid the “I’m 40” slacks-and-a-belt vibe.” That suggested to me that you possibly want to avoid wearing a belt since you specifically mentioned one. I was merely clarifying that men should always wear a belt (or suspenders).
I’m not against belts, but with the wrong pants, I think they do make you look kinda uptight. But maybe it’s the tucked-in-shirt look that truly bothers me >_>
Speaking again from the denim standpoint, untucked, long-sleeved (hate short-sleeved) button downs looks perfectly fine and not sloppy. Now, I wouldn’t go to a professional job that way, but it’s a rather standard crisp look that doesn’t look messy.
With khakis, though, I definitely prefer to have the shirt tucked in. Same with slacks.
My wife introduced me to khakis. They are very light, breathable, and stylish no matter who you are.
just make sure to get pants that do NOT have a plastic button. Trust me, I’ve broken enough buttons that my wife had to sew steel ones on. It’s like one minute you’re fine, then you bend a bit to pick up a pen on the floor, then pop.
