Oh no! a boob! :P

Ironic how that’s American Football in a nutshell.

Hadeyy! :too bad; :too bad; :too bad;

Well…will you go for the definition of a obscene being changed whenever the people wanting those commercials on the air do the “Give me a number.” trick?

Also, in television’s and soceity’s viewpoint, the definition of obscene fluctuates quite a bit these days, since I’m sure even one of those beer commercials wouldn’t be allowed a few decades back. Most people probably just go by whether this’ll give some raving mother any real wood to throw on the fire, except in this case, whether intentional or not, they gave the pack some gasoline.

It’s all shallow, it’s all stupid, and since that’s the way society is going to go, and my and your definition of what’s obscene doesn’t matter compared to soceity at large, I guess there’s no real satisfying answer to your question.

But most answers aren’t satisfying at all are they?

But well, hey, this isn’t going to go anywhere but I’ll try coming up with some more than likely crappy example anyway that seems incredibly hollow and shallow…which means it probably fits the bill when talking about America’s views on such things.

Friday After Next and a countless amount of other movies show such things like what happened in that commercial, and worse. But hey, they don’t exactly show the guy’s balls do they? And hey, the people paid to see the movie right? Then it’s all quite all right.

That’s justified, now, the thing with that commercial is, the guys who were checking to see if the commercials were alright to show on television probably saw it and said: “Hey, it’s not showing the guys balls, right? Hey, Budweiser is one of our top sponsers right? Hey, it’s not showing any part of the human body or saying anything bad, right? It must be fine.” Thus, all those mothers and whatnot who yearn for something like this to happen, say the same thing, the real sad/ironic thing about the matter is, as society gets more lenient on what’s obscene and what’s not, many of the people who go against such things find their own views changing with it…until it’s hit this snag here, I suppose. There was no way to directly justify the viewers for why they can’t say anything against seeing it. They were watching the half time show, yes, but when your watching a movie, you can expect stuff like that, but many people didn’t expect this kind of thing here.

I’m…kind of depressing myself, and confusing myself at the same time here.

I think that’s a sign I should stop.

See, this illustrates exactly why the fuss over an exposed breast is so idiotic - because it implies that it’s perfectly fine and wholesome for “KIDS” to watch beer commercials, commercials with flatulent horses, scantily clad cheerleaders, coaches mouthing obscenities, and, well, the aggressive sport itself, but a momentary look at a woman’s breast is somehow unthinkably damaging to them.

…ah, thank you, SK. My feelings in a nutshell.

But that’s the whole point! Why is a dog biting some guy’s balls so his owner can get some beer somehow less obscene than a split-second view of a female breast? It’s exactly that idea of what is and isn’t “obscene” that makes no sense.

Our morals make what is obscene. A man getting bitten by a dog, or a horse farting are both pretty tame, watch a cartoon for 5 minuets and you’ll see some reference to farting or testical smashing. Not everyone has the same morals as you, and most people don’t want to see frontal nudity on prime time brodcast TV. The main idea is that it was trashy and unnessesary and represents the cheapness of the current popular music and entertainment industy.

Yeah it was just a freaken boob, but they did it for ratings and money. MTV, Janet Jackson, and Justin Timberlake whored themselves out for more money one of the biggest TV audiences of the year, and thats what really pisses me off.

I find it funny that everyone’s talking about Janet having 1/3 of her breast exposed, and yet the guy who streaked doesn’t get as much attention.

I know it was trashy, but you’re missing the point. It makes no sense to say that watching someone get their balls smashed, or any of those other things, is less trashy or less lowbrow or shows “the cheapness of the entertainment industry” any less than an exposed breast. The point is, most of the event was trashy, most of it was done for “ratings and money,” and there were things in it that were just as trashy as that one part. It’s ridiculous to claim that all of those other lowbrow, trashy things don’t affect kids at all, but this one lowbrow, trashy thing is somehow a giant danger that they must be shielded from at all costs and thus we need to do a huge investigation into the matter. That just makes no sense; it’s as if you were to let your kid play first-person shooters without saying a word, but then suddenly threw a fit when he wanted to play Quake 2, even though you had no problem with him playing Doom, Quake 3 or any other such game.

If he had only done that some other year, he wouldn’t have been outstaged by the stars.:too bad;

…okay. The thread is about how everyone’s making a big deal over it, right?
Then why the HELL are people making a big deal about it here?
…I don’t get it.

Heh… I should have watched.

it needs to pointed out that america needs to get its priorities straightened out.

your favorite band is the Clash, Blue Mage?

Steve, you are so funny.

It’s a weird feeling to agree with more than one side, but I’m feeling what SK was saying in his last post. The inconsistency about the complaining is what gets to me. I think that the flashing was inappropriate but not deplorable, at least not any more so than some of the other things that have been available.

Favorate album not band. The album expanded over all the types of music I really like, making it enjoyable when I listen to it. It was also one of the first albums I owned. There not my favorate band, so don’t question my “1337ness” with music.

Edit: I just don’t want to see boobs on CBS. If i wanted to see boobs, i’d rent a porn.

lets not forget that CBS allows all this shit and at the same time refuses to air a moveon.org advert that was deemed “too controversial” for stating the truth that George W Bush has created a 1 trillion dollar deficit.

Fuck, it’s a sad day when a bunch of teenagers complain on a message board about seeing a breast on TV. Well maybe not a bunch… but still, that’s a bizarre society where minor things like that are shunned.

I want to marry SK

People’s opinions about what’s obscene vary significantly. Maybe someone is correct, but clearly not everyone. It’s almost irrelevant to point out that some people have inconsistent ideas about what’s obscene. Either it’s a matter of most people not knowing fully what obscenity is, or the idea of obscenity is an artificial concept about which people have strong beliefs.

People can believe what they’d like, whether their ideas are consistent or not. The object of government, in this society at least, is never to choose who has the best or most consistent beliefs and endorse them. Rather, in moral matters, the majority’s opinion is what counts.

The majority of people would likely agree that a naked breast appearing on a T.V. program that children watch, where nothing of the kind is expected, is wholly inappropriate. There are laws in place to enforce this sort of standard, so that people can more or less anticipate what T.V. programs will be agreeable to them. This clearly violates those laws.

You said what i wanted to in better words.

I think the disingenuousness of the act is a rather neglected piece of the issue. Clearly the NFL is rather peeved over the matter, and CBS/MTV are at least pretending that it happened without their foreknowledge, but I doubt (and have heard) that this is not true. All the other commercials and such, whether you do or do not agree with their content, are at least approved by the network beforehand (and they have denied commercials routinely in the past, particularly for the Super Bowl). But someone(s) chose to take the moment of a mass-national event to perform something else, that obviously is not liked by a lot of the people paying for the very performance (directly or indirectly). It’s akin to a streaker, or someone jumping on a civil rights demonstration to talk about moon rocks, or something.
