Oh dear, did I just screw up again?

Cookies to whomever gets the quote.

I went here to download a program (Which one is irrelevant since it’s not there anymore) and the page told me I had to get a Download Applet from that page. In one of the stupidest acts of my life, I downloaded the friggin’ thing, but here comes a problem:

It installed DIRECTLY into my HD without giving me it’s name or what files it was made of. When I got the “You must restart your PC for the installation to take effect yada yada yada…”, I did as I was told.

When Windows came back on, a message appeared that said something around the lines of:

“The installation program you are trying to execute contains outdated files of which a new version is already present in your system” and three options: “Execute Program” (Which is shadowed and cannot be selected), “Cancel” and “Details” (Which doesn’t say a damn thing).

I can just press “Cancel” and continue normally, but this message appears every time I restart my computer. There is an option for “Don’t show this message again”, but even if I click it, the message stills keeps coming up. I tried to find whatever files this new program is made of, but as I said, I haven’t got the sightless idea of how is it called, it doesn’t appear on the “Remove/Install Programs” nor there is any new folder anywhere. My only guess is that they are two or three small (The download was really quick) files somewhere, but I have no way of knowing which ones.

To make things worse, in a moronic attempt to fix it, I accidentally uninstalled Internet Explorer 6 (Leaving me with the already installed IE 5). Although I can fix this last thing myself.

You’re fucked unless you can find the program again, redownload it, open it in a Resource Hacker/Dev Kit, or anything that will display the source, find what files it installs, and to where.

Unless you can find out what it has put on your machine, there is no action to be taken. Once you find out what it is, you can remove it’s compenants safely, and eventually remove the registry keys it uses to keep showing that window, even if you select “Dont show me this window again kthx”.

Do you even know the name of the applet?

The page is called 35MB.com and it’s a free hosting site. The download applet seems to be exclusively from them, but it was created very recently and they have almost nothing up yet (For example, if I check the FAQs page, it says that “This will be up soon”). I tried contacting them but I got no answer.

you could use the search tool on windows to search for files that were modified in the last “blah blah days” or on a certain date.

Rommiel’s advice gave me and idea and I managed to track the fucker myself. Although I think I deleted a little bit of the register (Yes, I’m retarded).

Now when I click on the “Internet Explorer” icon on my desktop, it says it’s not associated with any application, so I have to use iexplore.exe that’s on Program Files to access the net. Does anybody know how to fix that?

Yea, i’m pretty sure that the IE icon on your desktop is a special shortcut, so you can’t just repoint it to the application. Try creating a new shortcut pointing to IE, and then right clicking it and changing it’s icon to the IE icon. (which should be in one of the main windows DLLs)

Nevermind that, I still have to reinstall IE 6, so the problem will probably be solved when I finish doing that.

Thanks everyone.

yay im useful!
