Nobuo Uematsu

If you want synths and drums/guitars, listen to some 80’s music. :stuck_out_tongue: That isn’t what makes music good, and if that’s about the best thing you have to raise against Uematsu being overrated? …Well, you don’t have much. :stuck_out_tongue: And sorry, but all that Magic Pengel and whatever else crazy stuff is just not gonna get recognized here, unless it has a big following in America.

I don’t really agree. There aren’t quite as many VGM composers that match the talent of Uematsu. Seriously…about the only ones I can think of are maybe, Hitoshi Sakimoto and Kenji Ito. But, let’s face it. They don’t have a following. Hitoshi Sakimoto might start getting some recognition now that he’s going to be doing Final Fantasy, but Ito’s got nothing much. Most of the games Kenji Ito has written music for haven’t even been released stateside, and let’s face it; Americans don’t like the SaGa series. It’s likely not going to happen.

I’m sorry if that sounds snobbish. I’m not just speaking from the perspective of simply taste; I’m a music theorist, and I analyze music. It’s what I do. :stuck_out_tongue: While I may not WRITE music in such a logical way, I can LOOK at it in a logical way. You know why the old Baroque music isn’t popular anymore? Is it because it’s advanced? Because people can’t keep their attentions on it for long? No. It’s because it’s boring. :stuck_out_tongue: It’s hard to make a song that is impressive from a theoretical standpoint, and translate that technicality to emotion. It’s much easier to translate emotion from something simpler. That’s why I think Uematsu is so awesome. He can do it. He’s got it. And even better, he’s got a following in America…a HUGE one. So, I see no problem with him being in the spotlight. When I hear that Uematsu is appreciated only because of Final Fantasy, I don’t entirely agree. I think that it’s in fact, the opposite; that Final Fantasy would probly not be the game that most people have come to appreciate without Uematsu. To say he’s got it made here because of FF’s popularity just doesn’t ring entirely true to me.

Also, lastly…you analogized this to the whole “underground artists have talent, but aren’t backed by big recording studios” deal. I’d say that that analogy is about as accurate as the actual statement…which is to say, not entirely accurate. A lot of underground music is actually just as bad as mainstream. Likewise, there’s an equal amount of talent in both mainstream and underground music. Don’t be mislead to think otherwise.
