New Superman

I read today that DC is reformulating SM. The sales of his comics have only been dropping on the last 15 years (or something like that), and they think it’s because Superman’s style is old.

So, there’ll be a new start for Superman (telling heroe’s stories from the beginning seems to be the new rage among DC & Marvel…). This time, the comics will feature a different hero. The classic SM we are all used to is a fearless gentleman. The new one will show fear and hesitate sometimes before getting to help people. He will also be less resistant to hits (he’ll take damage from lesser things too, the article didn’t mention whether it includes bullets). He will have a dirtier language, both using low slangs and insulting enemies.

Seriously, seems like they have pre-teened Clark with all this. Sacking Superman and putting that punk Superboy in his place would have much the same effect.

Sounds like they want a slight bit more variety to Justice League…

“Okay, now that he’s more vulnerable to everything else, we won’t need to use kryptonite globs as a cheap plot device (Just add water!)!”

Why can’t they just accept the fact that Superman (or any other faltering superhoer you like) is finally just too old, and let him retire in piece as a classic? WHy they have to re-invent everyone just seems… cheap. :\

BEcause it sells like bread to see how the heroes of the old are translated into the ‘modern’ era where all those wacky gadgets and inventions from their own time of birth might actually be real

And Spidey sure had a kick-ass transformation…

Exception that proves the rule. >_>

No, Superman will probably turn into whatever the fuck WB cranks out once it’s done <strike>raping the franchise like the fuckballs they are</strike> making the movie.

holds up a “DEATH TO WB!” sign

I remember they tried giving him different powers a few years back. Energy Superman or whatever - didn’t work at all.

Electric Superman. He had the power to go through things like a ghost, move at the speed of light, shock his enemies like an electric eel, see and sense the flows of energy, travel trhough power cables, and as a side effect he could change the appearance of his outfit at will, kinda like Venom. His weakness was that if you subjected him to a strong electrical or magnetical field, he would be traveling through it without being able to escape the pull.

As for Peter, his was not a real transformation. He had been designed as a teenager hero with internal conflicts ever since the begining. The only differences are that he had a fresh restart at the XXI century and that the spider that bit him in the new version was not radioactive, but rather transgenical. These things only reflect the object that is the current fear of conservatives. When they feared nuclear reactors every hero came out of radiation, now that it’s GM crops a lot of heroes will be redesigned as result of transgeny.

Ren: You’re PARTIALLY correct about Superman’s remake.

First of all, as we all know, there are SEVERAL versions of Superman currently. The comic book’s, the cartoon’s, and the TV show Smallville’s. (And if they make the fifth Superman movie, we’ll likely have yet another. BTW, StarS, the new movie will not necessarily suck. WB DID drag the Supes & Batman franchises thru the mud, but I hear they’ve learned their lesson (translation: The Marvel movies have shown them that they have to RESPECT the characters if they want them to sell) and that the new movies will be better done. We’ll see.

Anyway, the version that REALLY counts is the one from the comics, since all the ideas you see in the others are taken from them. And yes, I hear there’ll be a new version soon. However, what they want to do is change some facts from those that were introduced in the last revision. I REALLY doubt that they’re going to change Superman into a swearin’ fighting machine ala Punisher. Goes against what makes up the very essence of the character.

Basically, what they’re going to do, is change the last version of Krypton, which was a very “Vulcan-like” one (as in Star Trek) into a more human one; also, Lex Luthor is now Supes’ childhood friend (before becoming his nemesis) just like in Smallvile. (You’d think he’d found out his secret ID by now… or grown hair!)

Honestly, I don’t think these changes are THAT necessary, unlike the last revision, which needed to replace the version of Superman who could shatter planets with one that Supervillains would have a better chance to fight against. But, I guess it makes it easier for the lazy-bones writers to write Superman without doing much research.
Big question: will Supes will still be married to Lois Lane? We’ll see…

Reminds me of ‘new’ Coke. :\

Well in my opinion Superman should have ended with Doomsday. It gave the character meaning to sacrifice himself for thegood of humanity. It was the ultimate height of Supermannyness (>_>). I think to continue with it cheapens things. There’s only so many times someone can be resurrected before it gets old.

Ok Wilf… This is going to be a long one. The enitre thread is right here: Godawful Fan Fiction Archive .

That has reactions, and the statements from another Superman fan. So it’s second hand, I don’t know where he got his info from. It’s up to you to consider and contest. Now get some tea and brace yourselves for one hella long read.

Sorry about the hellishly long triple post, but hey, you see why I do not trust WB.

The reasons Superman should end:

  1. The character’s old as hell. He’s been fleshed out as far as anyone can take him.
  2. He’s been weakened to the point of obsurbity. I remember when Superman could, oh I don’t know, WIN A GODDAMN FIGHT! It’s all right if you lose to some evil alien overlord’s nuclear-powered robot, or Doomsday (that guy kicked some serious ass). It’s another thing when he loses to Lex Luthor (one of the wussiest characters ever) or Aquaman (who doesn’t have superhuman strength and lasers as one of his powers).
  3. The amount of kryptonite floating around is ridiculous. Krypton wasn’t really destroyed; it was simply shipped to earth one fragment at a time. Every villian has a pile of kryptonite lying around, just waiting to use it to trap Superman until either some cool hero (like Wonder Woman or Batman) saves him, or some lame hero (like Green Lantern or Aquaman) saves him (at which point he tries to shot himself until he realizes he’s immune to bullets).

So don’t revive him; just let him retire or die off. He’s made as much money as he’s going to.

…All… this… just for a movie about the FIRST REAL SUPERHERO!?

Geesh, the first Supes movie was good; Threat from the sun was good too; Didn’t like the others.

To me, Christopher Reeve is the real Superman. Heck, he’s done miracles even after the accident!

Hmm… very interesting read, SS. (Thought I had coffee while reading it, not tea!) Thanks.

The sad part is, most of it IS likely true. I’ve been following the Superman movie rumors for years and I’ve picked up pieces here and there that were mentioned above.

Of course, you have to remember that Hollywood rumors are not only often false, but INTENTIONAL, as mentioned in the article itself.

Still, assuming that the whole story is true: YIKES! I knew that the WB people were pretty ignorant about the DC characters (they bought DC comics years ago) but the fact that they have such total ignorance of the character- or worse, that they think they can change EVERYTHING about the character and the public would still accept it- is really pathetic! It wouldn’t be the first time that meddling by too many parties on a movie ruins it… but let’s hope that doesn’t happen to Superman V!

I’d like to point a few things, tho:
-From what I know, Kevin Smith NEVER wanted Nicholas Cage as Superman: he was forced to accept him (since Cage was obsessed to play Supes, and WB wanted him.)
-I find it very strange that none of the sources I follow (Wizard Magazine, Comic Book Resources website, etc.) ever mentioned the part about “fans agreeing that the re-imagining was needed.”
-In fact, this is the first time I ever hear of how drastic the revision was going to be… you’d think that would make it around the fan circles.
-50-75 $ million already spent on the movie? Not impossible, but collossaly stupid for a movie that doesn’t have a ready script or cast yet. WB would HAVE to be sure they can profit from it to continue.
Then again, they don’t have much choice. Marvel is raking the $$ and publicity from THEIR Superhero Movies. Makes DC look bad. The success of the next Batman movie will probably be the deciding factor on whether they go ahead with S-V or not.

d: Fictional characters don’t DIE- they’re just forgotten. Until someone brings them back again. And Superman is STILL too much of an Icon. Ask anyone on the street, odds are they’ll know who Superman is better than even real-life celebrities. In any case, WB is NOT going to let the character go away. (The whole Death of Superman story -and the Electric Superman one- were just PUBLICITY STUNTS; there NEVER was any intention of making them permanent. We long-time comics fans were never fooled- but the public at large sure was!)

BTw, Superman has never lost to Aquaman, that I know of.

Also, in the current version, there is only ONE chunk of kryptonite on Earth; it was stuck to the rocket that brought Supes to Earth! It was used as Metalo’s heart, then Luthor made his ring out of it. In fact, the damn ring has been stolen around several times; that’s how rare K currently is on Earth. (But since Supes is less powerful than before, it isn’t really needed.)
OF COURSE, there still are a few BILLION TONS of K back in the Kryptonian solar system! Makes you wonder why Brainiac doesn’t go collect it.)

The problem with the old superman? Not gay enough!
