What is the one thing that nearly destroys a perfectly good anime?
I don’t know about you, but the fanservice does irritate me a bit. Like when they make the boobs of a girl bounce around, or show the main characters in a public bath with nearly naked people surrounding them, or showing a certain part uncovered.
Yeah, if it plays a vital part in the plot, I can understand, otherwise no.
I’m just talking about the stuff just coming out of nowhere for no reason like “Let’s show them having sex for no reason.” Or “How about we do a shot of his butt so they know what it looks like?” That kind of stuff. ~_~
So what cliche gets under your skin?

That kind of stuff can ruin an anime and turn it into just another XB-rated waste…

The fanservice is for the fanboys, and in Japan you traditionally do go in the baths naked. Personally I don’t see the problem with Tasteful nudity, or a little joke every here and there. When it gets gratuitus it’s called hentai.

What is wrong with little children seeing nudity? So long as they are not being exposed to real pornography (exploitative sexual material), I see no danger in that. I have seen nudity, and even sex (although pretty much heterosexual vaginal sex), on television and in movies since I was a small child, and it has had little effect on me.
I may not be an avid watcher of Anime, but I hold my case.
Originally posted by Manus Dei Extreme violence, with guts and blood flying all over the place, is also improper for children, yet the Japanese never censor it. Strange…
Well, I agree with you more or less about the violence. But, sex, not violence, is the subject which I was hoping that you would adress.
It’s all really in the cultural differences. Over in Japan, nudity’s a small fry thing and it isn’t such a big boom, while in the US, it’s like a frickin’ satanic sin.
Public bathing’s a habit there, so why not go a bit into ordinary folks’ lives and locate some random episode there? Of course, bathing’s usually done (half)naked, or so I’ve heard. Is nudity UNNATURAL OR SOMETHING? Under your clothes, you’re naked!(OMG)
Hell, most western country people see the going to the Sauna naked in Finland odd! Going there all clad up would be like, UNCOMFORTABLE. ((Not to mention the fact it was one of the few hygiene-upkeeping things back then when we didn’t have waterpipes drawn everywhere and we’re talking about halfway 20th century here… good thing we’ve gotten this far!))
In the end, I’ll have to ask this:
Which is to be picked? IRL, “perfect” photo-edited, not-a-single-flaw naked women who you’ll never see without 3 kilos of makeup on to oogle over, or drawn ones who may not exist, but atleast they’re “real” in their own world? Your call.
Personally, I think that some anime characters have a perfection that only a few real world people possess. However, there must be a degree of self-restraint. As for local customs, they are to be respected, but I still think that humans should conceal their forms as much as possible. These matters are very delicate, and a person’s true uncovered form should not be excessively exposed.
