In Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (not GOTY), do the dark brotherhood assassins attack you, or is that just part of the Mounrhold mission, so you don’t get it?

It’s a part of the Tribunal expansion that the Dark Brotherhood goes after you. The mission that takes you to Mournhold entails more of you attacking <i>them</i>.
You can protect yourself by sleeping on the edges of cliffs if you like. That way an assassin or critter spawning in front of you at least takes a little falling damage before you have to deal with them.
